Re: T420s - experiencing CPU whine that is getting worse

2015-04-09, 9:05 AM

Hi,

My T440p has the same issue!! I have i5-4300M CPU. With i3-4000M i got the same result. I replaced motherboard via RMA, but the issue is still there. When I disable CPU deeper sleep, left half of keyboard get pretty hot, so it isnt sollution. I think about CPU upgrade to i7-4800MQ, but i fear it wouldnt help me.

I AM REALLY CRAZY from that annoing sound and I have no clue what to do. Any help?

Same issue with the T540p. It's annoying.
Like said before, I don't know why I recommend Lenovo to everyone who asks (and many who don't)...

Re: T420s - experiencing CPU whine that is getting worse

Sad story..I contacted the German support hotline last week. The details were noted done by 1 level support, then I was put through to 2nd level technical support..

I explained that I found a KB article defining an issue with CPU whining (https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/T510-T410-W510-ThinkPad-high-pitched-whine/ta-p/478215) and did a positive test with my laptop. She was angry and asked me why I disabled CPU Power Management and that the forum or any KB article is not valid for her. I should look up the support website to look for knows problems. Moreover, a known issue for this model does not exist. Finally, she agreed that I can send her a detailed description of the problem and the link to the above mentioned KB article.

3 days later I got a mail from them: "Vielen Dank, daß Sie Lenovo kontaktiert haben. Ihre Fall: XYZ wurde gelöst und geschloßen." / "Thank you for contacting Lenovo. Your case XYZ was solved and closed."

No further explanation or solution. This makes me sad.

Solved by sending an email "it was solved"? :D Does your laptop still whine or it helped? :D New telepathic repair technology? Nice!!

Misunderstanding. They said, my first mail didn't go through. Board was now exchanged. Result: CPU beeping still present. :(

Today Lenovo exchanged my CPU (on T540p) with no positive result. What I noticed today might help though: With Ubuntu 15.04 the sound is nearly gone. :)

So, might it be a (chipset) driver issue? What does Ubuntu do differently??
