T420s fan replacement help - do I need to replace

2014-08-09, 3:02 AM

I have a Thinkpad T420s, that I purchased in 2010 (I think).  When I use it the upper left hand corner of the laptop gets really hot.  Then it might cool off, but heats up again, etc...  To the point, that it is not comfortable to use on my lap.

Is this a  fan or something that can be replaced?  Or at this point, do I just need to buy a new thinkpad?  I use my laptop alot.

I appreciate all your help,

Welcome to the forum!

Open the machine up and clean the fan with compressed air, but make sure to hold the fins in place with a toothpick or a small screwdriver to prevent them from spinning.

Good luck.

Please help me someone. I have a bad fan on my thinkpad T420. And cleaned it several times. but still doesn't work. It stops sometimes. and some times makes noise. Please can someone tell if I need to replace whole heatsink and the fan part. Can i not replace only the fan?
