Re: T430 Fan speed

2013-03-28, 12:12 PM

I am one step from buying T430 and if this fan issue is not (at least partially) solved it is a deal-breaker for me.

So my question is - anyone had any luck with the BIOS update that NINE mentioned three posts above (v. 2.50 and higher, I presume)? Did anything change? Was the noise reduced on idle/low load?

Thank you for replies!

Yeah - it's a toughie. I knew I was buying a noisey laptop but I needed one in a hurry with expresscard, and the options are dwindling. HP Elitebooks have also been plagued with noise? Would I do it again? Probably not if I had time to research alternatives, and this will probably be my last Lenovo after 4 over 10 years. FWIW the bios hasn't changed anything for me. The most success I've had is running the tpfancontrol in smart mode when the noise is bothering me, and bios mode when I'm doing 'heavy lifting' with the machine.
But all-in-all, very dissapointing

Re: T430 Fan speed

I got my corporate T430 with integrated GPU/i5/SSD (company still uses Windows XP 32 bit but had 8 GB of RAM installed!)  just this week (hopefully Lenovo had changed the fan specs/design) and glad to have found this thread.  The fan was noisy compared to the older T410 and my personal X220.

Went through the entire tread as I wasn't confortable updating the BIOS to 2.53 since it was't my computer.  In hindsight, I should have read the thread in reverse starting with Page 28. :)

Fan sound is much better now but with turbo boost, it will be as noisy as ever.

Update to 2.53 folks and enjoy the silence.

I also followed another advice, though I'm not sure it will help.

In Bios, I think I got there by hitting F1 constantly while the machine was rebooting, then went config > power > adaptive thermal > and switch the other one to BALANCED as well.

Hope this helps.

I use the free software tpfanControl to reduce the fan noice to minimum.

You can customize the tpfanControl to your like.

I just downloaded the 2.53 bios update and the fan noise is BACK AS NOISY AND LOUD as it used to be!

The previous bios (I don't know which version it was), almost fixed the problem, or the noise certainly wasn't so bad running it.

Is there any way to go back to the previous bios version?

This is driving me mad.

Lenovo, you're really causing a lot of headaches here.  Just do something about it once and for all.

AndyPandy66,

Maybe the newer laptop I got had a different fan design.

I noticed a definite improvement with less audible sound.

Re: T430 Fan speed

I updated BIOS already when it was mentioned in few previous posts.

The noise is still the same if I start doing my simulation work or run some programing problem and also when I played audio or video. I cannot  take this laptop in meetings or in a class room where I  always need to demonstrate my work, because just due to the fan noise.

It is only 40 days that I am using this machine and  I requested to the seller to take this laptop and give my money back but he said it is totally NOT possible, They tried to fix this problem twice but it did not work, noise is still the same and after then I was told that “it is one of the feature of T430.”

I am really feeling that I made a huge mistake when I decided to buy this model and put my savings in it.

Thank you for information. So it seems that an all-round outstanding product is bogged down by a single flaw. Still, I believe it depends on the place you use your T430 and your personal sensitivity (although cpanchal's story of not being able to use it in public shows that even this may vary). I will reserve my final judgement until I see it in a recently-opened Lenovo showroom, though.
