T430 freezes

2013-12-12, 15:13 PM

Hi. I have an issue with my T430. It may work normally for a couple of days, but then it start randomly freezing every 30 minutes to couple of hours. After reboot it might not freeze for another couple of days. I couldn't detect what is causing the freeze. It might happen during low workload.

When it freezes first music stops playing and all windows show "Not responding", then mouse cursos stops responding. It lasts for about 20 seconds. After it unfreezes everything is back to normal.

Tried to install Windows 7 and 8. The issue happens with both.

Before attempting the warranty I would like to ask if someone else is having the similar issue.

My specs:

T430 (2349)

i5-3210M

NVS 5400M

4GB RAM

Samsung 830 Series 128GB SSD (upgrade)

Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I’m really sorry to hear that your Lenovo ThinkPad T430 is randomly freezing.

Ensure that air vents are not blocked and there is a proper air flow. Also, check the speeds at which the fan is spinning.

1. Remove all external devices and restore factory default hardware configurations by uninstalling all non-bundled devices.

2. Power on the machine with AC adapter and battery then check whether the problem still exists.

3. Go to BIOS by tapping F1 while Lenovo logo appears. Choose Config -> Power and ensure the below settings are as recommended.

  • Intel(R) SpeedStep technology [Enabled]
  • Mode for AC [Maximum Performance]
  • Mode for Battery [Maximum Performance]
  • Scheme for AC [Maximum Performance]
  • Scheme for Battery [Maximum Performance]

Then press F9 [Save and Exit].

4. Ensure Power Manager is configured correctly. Open Power Manager, Click Switch to: "Basic", Click "Power Plan" tab, Select "Maximum Performance", Press Apply then click Ok.

5. Bootup and press F8 to enter Safe Mode to check if the bootup speed is normal.

6. Input "msconfig" and click the tab "Startup" to disable all. Reboot and then shut down. If problem resolved, narrow down to specific startup file.

7. Run a complete virus scan.

8. Run Lenovo Solution center diagnostics and check if there is any hardware failure.

9. Run Lenovo system update and Windows update.

Also, check in event viewer to see what exactly is causing the freeze.

Hope this helps! Post back if issue persists.

Best regards,

Mithun.

Thanks for the reply. However it looks like most of your suggestions doesn't take into account that I had clean install of Windows 7 and restored to factory defaults to Windows 8. There is no malware or anything wrong in startup. I've also upgraded BIOS 2 times since the purchase.

I think this is similar issue http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/Periodic-freeze-but-doesn-t-crash-on-T430-Windows-7-x64/td-p/916255

Hi,

Did Lenovo Solution center diagnostics return any hardware failure reports?

Since you have tried a clean install of operating system, it could possibly be a hardware failure. I strongly recommend you to contact our technical support for assistance.

Click here to open a link where you can select the country and get the exact contact support number. I’m sure they will be a great help.

Best Regards,

Mithun.

I'm having a bad luck with this particular laptop: on arrival the battery wasn't charging, the "Esc" button was falling out when pressed, integrated camera was installed askew. Warranty replaced the batter and keyboard. Didn't touch the camera.

Also I wasn't happy with the fan noise. Reseller charged my company for the technician visit on the fan noise complain. Well I'm still unhappy with the noise, even after the latest BIOS update.

Now this freezing issue.

Hi,

Sorry for the inconvenience caused. :smileysad:

Assuming that your system is still under warranty, contacting Lenovo technical support and informing them the issues you are facing with the system is the best thing that I can suggest in this scenario.

Regards,

Mithun.

Any news on this issue?

Is it hardware related? Should we try to reach lenovo support to replace or fix the machine itself?

Lenovo tech support is the worst at fixing this freezing problem. I have a brand new T440s, rarely used, and basically every time I do use it (running internet browser only), the screen freezes. Hardware has absolutely no issues, and software, can't find anything wrong with it. Looks like there is NO option but to mail it in for repair under warranty....
