T430s - dazzling backlit keyboard

2012-08-13, 8:02 AM

Hi,

got my new T430s and I'm very happy with it, except with the "dazzling function keys". When You sit in front of the keyboard in a shallow angle, the LEDs of the function keys shines right into my eyes. I'm not sure, whether the keyboard ist mounted correctly or if this is a "feature" :smileywink: (will post a picture later).

regards, grappa24

I have the same thing, pretty sure that's the way it's designed. It hasn't bothered me.

Now that you mention it I see the same thing as well. But it's not objectionable to me, especially when the backlight is on "low" level.

It's particularly noticeable on the top row of keys because the keytops have a thinner "lip" than the rest of the keys. That seems like it was designed intentionally but it's not obvious to me what was the reason for it.

Yes yes yes.  I've noticed this on a T530 and a W530.  It's a real problem when I use it in bed, that's about the only time I get to a sufficiently shallow angle.  At normal angles, if you are seated in a chair, I'd be suprised if you saw that problem.

I was at Microcenter recently and saw a backlit keyboard on another major manufactuer's laptop (forget which).  It was designed the same way with massive light leaking out under the key caps at shallow angles.

Agreed it's sub-optimal design, but it's not just Lenovo.

Your picture is exactly what my T530 and W530 look like.  Separate from the illumination question, I've seen other posts from users inquiring why the FN row of keys is higher than the rest of the board.  Nobody really knows why it was designed that way, but everyone has a raised row of FN keys and lots of light from under all of the keys, and from under the FN keys in particular.

It's a shame really.  I REALLY like the new keyboard - I can type quickly and it has great feedback.  (Although not a fan of the new placement of home/end/delete.)

The new T series is very good, but falls short of greatness due to little issues like these.

in the german lenovo tp forum a user reported, that there are different keyboards from different manufacturers and that there is one with function keys not higher than the others and without the dazzling effect.

Think I should call the support and order me another keyboard ...

Re: T430s - dazzling backlit keyboard

I'm experiencing the same problem on my T430s.

Not only is the keyboard quite unevenly lit especially in the top row, the function keys are raised above the rest.

I quite often get the tip of a finger under one of them (esc being the most prominent one) so that I have to fear I might break them - and seeing threads about crumbling keys on this board I don't think this is a pointless fear at all.

I'm really disappointed that one of the reasons I bought a Lenovo, the renowned keyboard, is actually one of it's worst parts.

Are there any experiences with (German) keyboards that suggest there are in fact better produced ones out there?

you could contact lenovo service and ask them to send you a new keyboard; if you are afraid to change it by yourself (it is shown in the manual) you should look for a local lenovo service, which orders and changes the keyboard for you.

In my local store I have seen several T430s with correct lit function keys. In my case the following keys are not lit:

Left: Esc and F1, Right: Pos1, End, Ins and Del
