T430s default wiFi antenna

2013-09-18, 10:37 AM

I've ordered T430s deliberately with Centrino 6205 Wifi, since no WiFi around is capable to support 450Mb.

I will yet to see if there is a chance to take advantage of Centrino 6300 in the future.
In such a case I have got a these questions:

  1. Is T430s fitted with 3x3 antennas as standard no matter if currently installed with Centrinon 6205? If only 2x2 antennas are fitted, is it possible to replace 2x2 for 3x3?
  2. Is there a white list for WWAN cards in T430s or may I plug in any WWAN card with PCI Express Mini interface? Does the card have to be manufactured specifically for or by Lenovo?
  3. My T430s has bluetooth. Is bluetooth adapter and antenna completely independent of WiFi, so that changing Wifi will not affect bluetooth in any way?

Thanks.

Re: T430s default wiFi antenna

To the best of my knowledge, most but not all T430s come with three antenna cables. If only two are used,  the connector of the third (white) is kept in a small protective sleeve inside the laptop, so it's not difficult to install an intel 6300. The problem is that installing it yourself will void your warranty...

If you have a model with only two antennas you will have to take apart half the laptop to install a third, voiding your warranty in the process. You should go to a Lenovo Service representative to do it for you.

All components that need FCC approval (or other official approval by European, Asian etc agencies) are whitelisted, so you need to replace them with Lenovo FRUs. This includes the WWAN modules.

As for the bluetooth, i think that it is completely independent., being a daughter card on the side of the laptop with no cables attached. Check your  hardware maintenance manual for details.

Re: T430s default wiFi antenna

Once my computer arrives, I will see if there is the third (white) cable already installed.

Taking the display assembly apart to install third antenna is likely to be a job for service.

However if the upgrade shrinks to removing one PCI Express mini card and plugging-in another, it would really surprise me if that voids the waranty.

Is there available a list of upgrades users are allowed not to void the warranty? E.g. plug-in another RAM module - OK/void. Replace HDD with a SSD - OK/void etc.

Is it possible to install any FCC approved WLAN (WiFi) card or only Lenovo FRU?

1. I have had 3 T430s so far, and all of them had 3 WWAN antennas, whether you have the 6205 or the 6300 wireless card. Adding the third antenna, would mean taking the whole laptop apart, since it has to route through the chassis of the laptop, and the actual antenna is fixed to the top of the LCD.

It is easy to verify the antenna setup by opening the bottom RAM door (2 screws hold the bay door).

Have you updated the BIOS?

2. The WWAN as mentioned by BigBlack is whitelisted. So you would need to buy the WWAN card listed in the parts list.

3. The bluetooth antenna on the T430s is actually embedded within the Bluetooth module itself.

The Hardware Maintenance Manual for your machine (check link on my previous post) has a list of CRUs - Customer Replaceable Units in page 50 53  if i'm not mistaken. I know it seems irrational but the WiFi module is not a customer replaceable unit, therefore the warranty is voided if you change it yourself.

It is not possible to install any FCC approved WiFi card, the approval is for the laptop as a whole and not for the card itself, therefore only Lenovo FRUs are allowed, and not all of them, only the ones tested with the specific machine. Again, check the HMM or the parts link from lead_orgs post for a list of FRUs that have been approved and installed in the T430s.

I would suggest you contact a Lenovo Service representative for any such alteration to the machine if you don't want to mess with warranty issues. Again, i know it seems irrational. Of course you can take your chances, just be aware of the possible consequences...

So not to void the warranty you can replace an HDD but the only mSata drives you can add (thru Lenovo services) are the small ones with FRU numbers used for cache only.

T500: Vista 32, 2.8GHz, 4GB RAM, 15.4" 1680x1050, 500GB 7200rpm, ATI Radeon HD3650 + Intel 4500MHD. T42: XP, 1.7GHz, 2GB RAM, 14.1" 1024x768, 250GB PATA, ATI Radeon 7500.

There is a trick here. Sure, via Lenovo services you can only add small 16GB mSata SSDs, but there is no whitelist for other mSata SSDs. You can add any mSata SSD from the market and boot from it, no problem!

Unfortunately it is not a CRU, therefore again the warranty is voided...:smileysad:

Reading the HMM I see that both replacing the pci-e wlan and the pci-e wwan cards are in fact optional service CRUs. So changing the wifi card does not void the warranty. Only putting an mSata card in the same connector as the wwan card is an FRU and so would void the warranty.
