T430s graphic card (GPU) crashes randomly

2013-04-29, 10:18 AM

Dear Lenovo,

I have bought my T430s a couple of month ago.

I have a undeterministic problem with the GPU. The computer freezes randomly (mostly during video or streaming, but sometimes only while browsing WWW) once a couple of days with the following result:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtrKaLGHh1M

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7yIJttOZgo

It goes on for a couple of minutes and then the computer reboots.

I went to the Lenovo service, but they had no idea what was the reason as they couldn't easily reproduce the problem. As the computer is my tool for work, I couldn't leave it there for 2 weeks. I gave up trying to fix the problem and accepted it.

Now in my company they ordered 8 T430 and 5 out of these 8 experience the same issue as mine. I believe it must be a standard problem and solution should be known. Is there a one?

Kind regards!

This looks like graphics memory corruption.

Possible causes:

1. Overheat ( Check that fan is working)

2. Bad driver ( Update to latest driver or reinstall )

3. Current from power adapter is too low (Does this crash only happed on specific location or same program is open that make cpu/gpu run at 100%)

What accessoried you have connected to laptop when laptop crash?

Does crash happend if you disconnect everyting exept external mouse?

As already stated by OUTOUSER but as its happing with more than one system. Boot up clean (cold boot) and go the Think Vantage driver updates. If there is a new GPU package presented install it. DO NOT attempt a BIOS update if your system cannot run stable with crashing for at least an hour. Trying in safe mode may help. To me it may be the graphics driver.

You should or someone knowledgable the the even log for the critical even(s) which happened at the time of the crash. If its power or thermal triggered they will likely be an indication ther where to look further into.

Has there been any solution for this issue? I'm having the exact same issue on my T430s (screen looks exactly the same). I'm pretty sure this is a hardware issue, cause it happens under Windows and Linux.

TIA,

René

I have had exactly the same problem with my T430, I have had the motherboard replaced twice now and it has started to happen again! The strange thing is after mobo replacement it works perfectly for months and then out of the blue it will happen, it will then happen very rarely (under once a week) but then it will become more and more frequent.

I have checked the RAM using the Lenovo diag utility at POST and using Memtest and it shows fine. I have used the Lenovo update utility to update everything and still it happens.

Have you altered any of your hardware? I am using a Samsung 840 SSD and Corsair Vengence 2x4GB memory (details below).

RAM:

Corsair CMSX8GX3M2A1600C9 NB Vengeance Performance 8GB 1600MHz CL9 DDR3

The problem is the issue is so intermittant that I cannot test it thoroughly without replacing hardware and using for a few weeks or more. When the screen crashes I am not doing anything that is labouring the machine, I usually just have the internet open and notepad as I mainly use it to administer networks, not for streaming etc. and it is on a desk so there is sufficient airflow.

Also a quick addition, I don't use the laptop much, it gets used weekly but not daily. In comparison my old T410 is used every day and that has never had an issue. I imagine my laptop has less strain put on it than the average user and it does not feel hot when the crash occurs so I don't believe it is a thermal issue.

@AK47UK,

It might be the Corsair RAM; they've been knwon to have really weird issues in ThinkPads. Not sure if this is still an issue now.

Thanks for that, first I had heard of that and I have always found Corsair to rock solid in other applications. Will get some more RAM to test, would be interesting to hear if the others with the same problems had changed their RAM, 5 in 8 laptops affected sounds very high and would be a great opportunity to test to find the problem.

Also odd that replacing my mobo fixes it for months and then the problem returns slowly until it eventually becomes far more regular.

Will start with the RAM and then submit a third warranty request if neccessary.

What configuration? T430? T430s? Integrated or discrete graphics? Is the laptop shutting down automatically after the problem occur?

Re: T430s graphic card (GPU) crashes randomly

i7-3520M, 2x4GB Corsair Vengence RAM (full spec above), 250GB Samsung 840 SSD

T430 2349-KAG

Nvidia NVS 5400 & Intel HD 4000 (I think it usually runs on the Nvidia though)

Once it crashes with the distortion seen in the youtube vids from the OP it will automatically restart after seconds.
