T440s Bitlocker issue

2014-08-06, 15:28 PM
Have no idea why, but cannot use bitlocker anymore. If i try to start "manage bitlocker", i end with error message on the screen. I tried to create new user profile but there is more or less smae message, only for that different profile name. Any ideas? Or reinstall is only way?

I haven't seen this before.  I wonder if it's a GUI problem with "Manage BitLocker", or something actually wrong with BitLocker.  Can you try running cmd prompt as admin and "manage-bde.exe -status"?

Re: T440s Bitlocker issue

Yeahh, this i already tried, but volume seems to be strange for bitlocker, see screenshot. I have Samsung 840 EVO there and use eDrive functionality. Then i switched Bitlocker on and it was working without any issues (i have red issues with eDrive versus Lenovo drivers, but i use original system one). Had no issues at all. But few days ago i found out that Bitlocker is gone from my C: drive. So i tried to run management tool and found this problem. I have also that 16 GB mSATA disk inside, used separately as disk D. This one is encrypted by Bitlocker as well, software way, as it does not support eDrive. I can unlock the drive, but if i right click on the menu of the disk, where there is also "Manage Bitlocker" or "Change Bitlocker Password", id does completely nothing, even no error, it just ignores. Strange enough. I guess my partitioning is OK, as it worked fine till now. So that links of another user here above are not valid for me. Something in the shadows happened.

Did you ever install Intel Rapid Storage driver, even by accident?  I think it can cause BitLocker/eDrive to become confused like this.

Re: T440s Bitlocker issue

Finally i had time to reinstall laptop completely. I installed clean Windows 8, updated to Windows 8.1 and using Thinkpad System Update installed all drivers, including Intel AHCI driver. Samsung tool showed all data security modes as disabled, which i guess is that well known issue of that Intel driver. With this constelation, i was able to start Bitlocker standard way, but it did only software way encryption, long runing one without eDrive support. But Bitlocker itself works correctly. So i uninstalled this Intel AHCI driver back and returned to original Microsoft driver. With this driver eDrive mode is supported, i was able to enable Bitlocker as well and it asks for restart. Normal process. After restart i took a look on disk C and found out same behaviour as before reinstalation. No Bitlocker encryyption on disk C and Manage Bitlocker console generates again same unspecified error. So i installed again Intel AHCI driver, restarted and Bitlocker console is again available and i can encrypt C drive, but software way. So my result is, with my eDrive mode enabled Samsung 840 EVO and original Microsoft AHCI driver i can switvh on Bitlocker, it looks everything correct like it is really going to be switched on, but after restart Bitlocker is not enabled on drive C and Manage bitlocker console stops working. With Intel AHCI driver Bitlocker works, but not in eDrive mode. What a behaviour :-(

Re: T440s Bitlocker issue

I decided to forget the whole eDrive thing and just set an ATA password for the SSD in the BIOS. This provides the same hardware level encryption with a Samsung 840 Evo than Bitlocker/eDrive would, the only drawback is no audit or policy management for corporate environments, but not an issue for me as this is my personal machine.

The other advantage to forgetting about eDrive is I can install the Intel drivers which allow me to use Rapid Start Technology (AKA 30 day standby) to improve battery life. After 2 hours my machine transitions from sleep to hibernate using the old previously unused 16GB cache SSD as a hibernation partition.
