T440s Trackpoint shuts off due to clicking with touchpad

2014-08-27, 7:42 AM

Hey guys, this is my first posting, so I hope I get everything right.

So, I have a weird problem. On my T440s, the trackpoint works alright when my computer wakes up from being shut off or standby. However, as soon as I do 2-4 clicks on my Trackpad, the trackpoint stops working. I did all Windows Updates, also did all Lenovo Updates, including of course the Ultranav Synaptics driver (reinstalled that several times, also as an administrator). Nothing worked. When my computer gets back from standby or from being shut off, the trackpoint works, even for longer periods of time. However, as soon as I use the touchpad to click a couple of times, it completely stops working and I can only get it to work again by restarting, going into standby or even installing a new driver (however, it then quits working again after a couple of touchpad-clicks).

Any help / ideas would be greatly appreciated...

@mulgul,
I think your TrackPad is defective. Contact the Lenovo Service.

Betreff: T440s Trackpoint shuts off due to clicking with touchpad

Ok, thanks for the reply. I guess I have to ask Lenovo to exchange my Touchpad and see if it works then. The weird thing is that I wonder if it can really be a hardware issue as it works again (until clicking a couple of times) after coming back from standy...

I had this problem too - sent in laptop for warranty repair - came back wtih a new keyboard/trackpoint, but still has the exact same problem.  I heard that if it's a software problem, lenovo wipes your HD to factory state.  That sounds awful.

did you ever get your problem fixed?

thanks

No, in spite of having exchanged the whole motherboard and the keyboard, the problem is not yet resolved. I also wiped windows clean to its "out of the box" state, which did not help, so I doubt it is a software issue. Two more things that got me thinking: The problem started after I started using a UMTS card in my notebook, maybe one hardware interferes with the other? Also, the problem did not appear so far when I used my computer in Windows Safe Mode, so it might be that the Safe Mode blocked some hardware that otherwise interferes with the Trackpad. I hope exchanging the Trackpad, which has not yet been done, will solve the issue... I can't believe how long this has been going on now for.

So Luosha, you never got your trackpoint to work again?

Martin

Do you have an solution for that issue? Since I have the same problem; Touchpad was changed, Mainboard and Keyboard too. I can't count the system reinstalls I did during the last weeks. But in my system the exact same problem occurs when I use an Ubuntu-Live USB Stick.

Dear RGeo,
no, they have exchanged the motherboard and the keyboard, and no change so
far. I am really disheartened to hear that they even exchanged your
touchpad without any effect on the problem, because that is what Lenovo
wanted to do next, but they have a problem with the delivery of the parts,
so the problem is still pending, since 2 months and I can't use my touchpad
/ trackpoint... Also, I don't think it's a software problem, as it seems to
occur with multiple operating systems. But I don't understand what part of
the hardware could be causing the problem, after (in your case) they have
exchanged the motherboard, touchpad and keyboard. Man, this is not what I
spent over 2.000 Euro on a notebook for...

Cheers,
Martin

So, Lenovo exchanged the touchpad (after having exchanged the motherboard and the keyboard, which changed nothing) and since 24 hours, everything is working perfectly again. So I think it was a hardware problem of the Touchpad. I'll let you know if the problem occurs again (I really really hope it won't).
