T440s UEFI install Windows 8

2014-07-10, 20:58 PM

Hi, I bought a T440s and am trying to install Win 8 in UEFI mode. I have an original Win 8 DVD (system builder) and tried it via USB as well. My problem: There's no UEFI DVD/USB option in the boot menu (F12) - only DVD/USB without UEFI. However if I put the DVD/USB in my friends MacBook Pro the EFI option is shown. So the problem is probably the T440s.

I tried a lot of different settings in the BIOS:

UEFI only/both

CSM enabled/disabled

Secure Boot on/off

Quick Boot on/off

Furthermorem, the T440s is equipped with a 500 GB Samsung EVO SSD. MBR/GPT should not be the problem, since it should still show the UEFI option in the boot menu even if the SSD would be partitioned in MBR.

What am I doing wrong?

Well, in BIOS you should set to Boot UEFI Only. Then it doesnt matter, what is in F12 menu, because it will each time boot ONLY in UEFI mode. So if you set in BIOS UEFI Only, are you able to boot from DVD or not? If not, i would prefer to make USB disk bootable in UEFI (GPT), this will work for sure, if you make it correctly.

I'm able to boot from usb and DVD but without uefi. And: if i Set uefi/Legacy to "both" i should get 2 options (e.g. Uefi DVD and non-uefi DVD) which is not the case. Has anyone with a t440s managed to get the uefi option in the boot menu (F12)?

I really can't boot it from USB, wasting already 1 day on this.

Did you start the reboot with the 1st CD of numner 2 discs?

What program did you use to extract the DVDs ISO into the USB key?

LENOVO: was it that difficult to include a partition with the bootable win8 installation DVDs, along all that other bloathware?

Hi everyone,

A couple of things to try:

Turn off Secure Boot in the BIOS.

Try holding down "Shift" during "Restart" to force the "Friendly GUI menu" to boot by choosing your bootable device.

It is a 64bit OS. The USB key was formatted in FAT32, I also tried to copy the EFI file into the USB Key

got tired to waste time on it and went for an external DVD burner, (which I will probably never use in my life) it installed at once...still wondering why I was not able to use the USB images

Glad you got it installed.  I've got a question, if you don't mind: did you format the flash drive FAT32 or did it come from the manufacturer that way?

I've installed Win 7 and 8 UEFI mode using the manual method in that eightforums link above several times without problems. However:  sometimes the flash drives out of the box won't work.  They appear to be FAT32 but the partitioning (or lack of it) is strange, and they won't boot. Using DISKPART to clean, partition, and format - and then copying the ISO or DVD contents to the drive - generally fixes that.

Just curious if this happened in your case.

Regards,

Z.
