T450s Docking Station Problems: Unexpected Shutdowns

2015-06-24, 15:14 PM

I recently got a T450s and I've been having issues docking/undocking the PC.  Generally, the issue is with undocking. I put it to sleep, wait for the "sleeping" red LED on the lid, then undock; upon opening the laptop a few minutes later (and pressing power), the PC is having a fresh boot.  Windows logs confirm this was an unexpected shutdown.

In another instance - one off and potentially unrelated - the sleeping laptop was docked, and upon pressing power, I was greeted by a BIOS message asking me to check date/time.  I did - BIOS settings were wiped - date was 1/1/2001.  I noticed I had some static charge on me (not much though, summer time in Seattle) when I docked.  This particular issue has me wondering if also an ESD bug; I know certain T-series or W-series ThinkPads had issues 5-7 years ago docking station ESD issues.

Regardless, this is big problem for me.  I can't reliably leave any documents open when undocking.  I updated to the latest BIOS and it still had the unexpected shutdown.  I am running W8.1.

This is the log from the BIOS update:

[2015/6/23 16:48:58]
OS = Windows 8 64bit
Driver Loading....Done
System BIOS Version -> JBET48WW
Applying BIOS Version -> JBET49WW
System EC Version -> JBHT13WW
Applying EC Version -> JBHT13WW
AC adapter/Battery check....OK.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Thedajo,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

Can you please check with updating the drivers for the Docking station, below is the link where you can download the driver for your model.

http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/migr-4tpjf4

Hope this helps.

Best regards,

Hemanth Kumar

Hi Hemanth,

Thanks for the suggestion.  I ran the utility and the only thing available for the ThinkPad Pro Dock (65 W) was a firmware update utility.  I ran the utility and it appears I have newer firmware than what's posted on the site.  See utility output below:

CHIP ID: VMM2322
CHIP version: A3
Firmware version: 2.22.000

Update to version: ver2.17.000!!!

As such I did not run the update.

That revision appears dated 2014 - is there something newer posted elsewhere?

Thanks for the suggestion!

David

Hi Thedajo,

Thank you for the reply!

Can you check with the below link, the issue mentioned is different in that but you can just download the firmware and install it.

Re: T450s Docking Station Problems: Unexpected Shutdowns

2015-06-26, 14:31 PM

The plot thickens!  Yesterday I had the laptop shut off 2 when unplugging from the standalone AC adapter: once when sleeping, the other while powered on.  This was the first time I had actually used an AC adapter by itself.  This tells me it's an issue with the laptop, and not the dock.

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks!

David

Hi David,

  • Did you check with booting the system into “Safe Mode” option?
  • Is the issue arises before booting to Windows or after booting to windows.
  • Did you check with running ThinkVantage system update when connected to “Docking station”, in this we can update all the required drivers and application?

Best regards,

Hemanth Kumar

Hi Hemanth,

I think the driver and/or BIOS update must have resolved the issues.  I have not had the issue since!

Many thanks!

David

Actually - the issue is not gone.  I one again had the PC shut off when removing AC power.  I've got an on-site service appointment for Monday, and I'll post the solution here.

Cheers!
