Re: T450s m.2 SSD

2015-04-30, 12:07 PM
Kallisti, correct. The 450s uses an M.2 SATA interface.
Please know that it is not supported as a boot drive and, me being hardheaded, went with the transcend MTS400 M.2 SSD drive as boot, and less than 1month of use the computer won't boot.
I know that I'm posting over and over again, but I want to be sure that I save somebody the ordeal that I'm going through now.

kallisti,

I now have a T450s on my bench.  The m.2 slot is 2242 and SATA.

Testing with MyDigital and ADATA 256GB  m.2 SSDs.  Also testing a Crucial 480GB 2.5" SSD.  Will post performance test results in a few days.

Re: T450s m.2 SSD

2015-05-14, 22:08 PM

I replaced the HDD with a Samsung 850 Pro 1TB SDD and got a MyDigitalSSD 256GB m.2 in the NGFF slot next

to the WLAN card.

No issues, works great.

My T450s also had the default 16Gb m.,2.  I was planning to replace that too with a higher capacity m.2 for a Linux Boot.. I could not locate it (t is not under the internal battery unlike the T440s!).

Has anyone located where it is installed.  Since it is alternative to the smart card, it is possible that the 16GB is there.

I have my T450s open on the bench, but can't figure how to get to it.

Please post if anyone has figured it out.

Thanks

Mkris

Re: T450s m.2 SSD

mkris, I believe you can get to that slot by removing the internal battery. There are instructions on how to get to it in the hardware maintenance manual.

My confusion is about the SSD configurations that are possible with the available M.2 NGFF slots. I purchased a basic t450s with a 16GB SSD + 500 GB HDD and opted for a 3rd M.2 SSD.  My question is then, do both of these slots take the 2242 NGFF SSDs? And which is single or double-sided? I read somewhere else that the slot available underneath the battery will only take a single-sided 2280 SSD but not sure how true this is.

What I wanna to do is increase the pre-existing 16G SSD cache to maybe 128GB to improve HDD performance, and install a SSD boot drive in the other slot. Is this possible? If so, what are my size restrictions for each of the 2 available slots? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. This is my first good quality notebook and don't wanna end up 1) breaking anything and 2) wasting money buying the wrong things.

Thanks,

hau5junkie

Hi Hau5junkie87,

My buy was similar to yours, 3rd M.2 slot, 16GB SSD etc.

The form factor is M.2 2242.  I now have the a Samsung Pro 1TB SSD replacing the 500 GB that came with it

and a 256 GB M.2 2242mm SSD in the M.2 slot next to the Wireless Card i.e. I used the WWAN card slot is used for the

256GB SSD from Crucial).

I had another M.2 2242 SSD and was attempting to replace the 16GB SSD that came from Lenovo and was looking

for that.  After having twice opened the machine, I have not been able to find the slot under the internal battery unlike

the T440 videos on the internet (youtbe, frusonfone etc.).  After your response, I di dgo through the T450s H/W manual and there is no reference to the 16GB OEM slot anywhere.  What is shown is the M.2 slot at WWAN card which I have used.

Hence my post asking if any one has found it.

The form factor of the WWAN slot is 2242, single sided.  I doubt whether the 16GB card will be 80mm, since the T440s 16GB under the internal battery was also 2242 single sided.  Can't be sure unless someone actually confirms it visually.

If anyone finds the 16GB SSD, please do post.

Thanks.

MKris

Hi zoltan,

Did you ever get around to comparing the MyDigitalSSD and ADATA 256GB 2242 m.2 SSD? I'm in the market for one.

I did.  FWIW, at the bottom of this article:  https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Community-Spotlight/ThinkPad-T450s-SSD-migration-amp-OS-Installation-Clean-Clone-and/ba-p/2082736

It's a toss-up IMHO.  I'd probably go with local availability and price.  Warranty too if there's a difference.
