Re: T450s m.2 SSD

zoltan,

thanks for posting the link to your writeup. I was also curious about the m.2 drives, and look forward to reading through that whole thorough review of the machine.

I've have been enjoying the machine with light usage so far w/ the standard 500GB HD. It's so much better than my old x120e and so much more portable than my work w520.

The internal SSD is located under the internal battery.

The first few steps are described in the Maintenance manual: Shut down the laptop, go into the BIOS Config, Power settings to disable the internal battery; remove the removable battery; then remove the bottom cover.

Remove the 3 screws that secure the internal battery.

Move the internal battery out of its slot, laying it beside the laptop. There is no need to disconnect the battery from its connector; you're just moving it out of the way to the side.

Remove the 2 screws that secure the speaker assembly.

Move the speaker assembly off to the side. Again, there is no need to disconnect it.

Remove the 2 screws that secure the grey plastic retainer that sits below the speaker assembly.

Remove the grey plastic retainer.

Remove the 2 screws that secure the silver metal cover plate.

Lift up the metal cover plate from one end revealing the M.2 SSD attached to its underside.

This is the one listed under: Micro Hard Drive: 16GB M.2 Solid State Drive Single.  There are two options for this:

No NGFF SSD, or 16GB M.2 Solid State Drive Single. My post describes the system ordered with the '16GB M.2 Solid State Drive Single' option.

The other M.2 SSD is listed under: System Expansion Slots: 3rd M.2 SSD slot. There are 3 options given for that: No Smart Card Reader, 3rd M.2 SSD slot, and Smart Card Reader. If you order the 3rd M.2 SSD slot option then there will be a spare M.2 slot next to the WiFi card.

ZTC M.2 SSD 256GB installed and a WD 1TB drive installed... other than finicky windows 10 works perfect.  On build 15732 (insider) and now works perfect.  Thanks for the write up.

Has anyone successfully installed two 256GB M.2 drives, one in each of the two empty slots?

Re: T450s m.2 SSD

If you don't select the "Micro Hard Drive: 16GB M.2 Solid State Drive Single", then the option for "System Expansion Slots: 3rd M.2 SSD slot" disappears. I asked a lenovo rep via live chat and he confirmed that in that case there would be two available M.2 slots. Can someone else confirm that? And if so, given that the 16GB drive is too small to be any useful, isn't it better to not select any of these options?

Hi airmark. I've ordered mine in februrary. I didn't select the 16gb m.2 and only got 1 M.2 free slot. If you don't buy the micro hd, you don't get the extra slot.

So the whole reason for buying this drive is to get the slot basically, right?

Is there another adaptor that could work alternatively? Because the space inside the laptop should be identical no matter the configuarion, so if the drive is not present, the physical space should be empty and perhaps another adaptor would allow someone to utilize it and connect a larger drive.
