T450s screen stopped working

2019-11-27, 13:54 PM

Hi,

A few days ago the screen on my T450s did not turn on when waking the computer up. I looked around the internet and found a thread describing similar issues, that were solved by disconnecting the interan and external batteries and the CMOS battery. This worked, but a short time after that the issue returned. I performed the procedure again, and again, it worked, but this time it took even less time until the issue returned.

I tried it a third time, this time the screen just went blank while the machine was on and running windows, but this time, before it went black, there were some flickering.

I thight it might be the cable connection, so I opened up the screen as well, but didn't want to touch the strong tape on the connector. I did disconnect and reconnect the connector on the motherboard side.

After that I did another test run, this time, while still in the BIOS settings (to update time) it blacked out.

Is there anything else I'm missing before I start to replace parts?

I thought I'll start by replacing the cable, if this doesn't work, I suspect the motherboard, but realize it might also be a faulty PCB on the screen it self.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers,
o

So here's an update.

After leaving the issue for a long time (I already got a new laptop), I decided to give it another try.

Since I wasn't sure if the problem is with the screen or motherboard, I got this board to help me debug: https://www.ebay.de/itm/30Pin-Hdmi-Edp-Lcd-Controller-Board-Driver-Kit-Lcd-Driver-Board-For-1080P-1-E2N9/123778795632?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649

Using this board I could tell that the screen is broken. So I ordered a replacement screen, and it worked!

Cheers,

Ofer

Hi again,

Since there are no better ideas, can someone please point me to where I can purchase a replacement cable? I don't see it in the parts list on the T450s support page.

Thanks,
o

Hi,

So, I replaced the cable with a new one, but the original problem seems to persist. I haven't seen any flickering now, but I've had the screen turn off a few times already in the short amount of time I had to test it. In some cases I was able to bring it back to life by simply letting it go to sleep by closing the screen, and then waking it up again, but that doesn't always work.

Any more ideas what might be the cause, before I go spend a lot of money on replacing the motherboard?

Thanks,

o

I have similar problem with a Lenovo that lcd stops working but works fine with VGA external monitor, at the beginning we believe was a missfuntion of the lcd panel so we replace for a new one but the problem is that it not turn on either.  we suspect that the lid sensor is the problem but not sure how to locate in this model to see if we can disconnect or replace to see if this turn on the Internal LCD screen.

Model: Lenovo

type: T450 20BV-005lm

I disconect external. and internal batteries (including bios battery too) but no luck

Any ideas?

Hi,

Got out my T450s.  Using the paperclip trick locates the magnet in the base.  Same trick should work with most newer ThinkPads. The sensor will be opposite in the display assembly.  Likely it's part of the  mic/camera module.

You could unplug it there or @ the motherboard.  I don't know if unplugging will cause it to appear always open or always closed.

FWIW,

Z.
