T460 battery life - is the claimed 17 hours achieved in practice?

I'm considering a refurbished T460. I read reviews claiming 17 hour battery life with a 3-cell internal and 6-cell external battery.

For example: https://www.laptopmag.com/reviews/laptops/lenovo-thinkpad-t460

Is this battery performance really achieved in practice?

I have a T430 with 9-cell Lenovo battery and have never achieved more than 3.5 hours on a full charge in normal use (I don't do games). Can the much more powerful T460 really run more than 5 times longer on the same cell count?

Regards,

Rob

5-6 hours.... not happy.

Yep, same here. But browsers these days are pretty power hungry. If I'm running lots of tabs spread across google doc, vid conferencing, Slack, etc. It does burn through the battery at a fair rate.

Published battery life is about as reliable as noise levels on fans. What is published is proably under best scenarios.

Also, you can't just look at the number of cells, you need to look at the number of WH (Joules) of energy that the battery has.

Focussing solely on the number of cells is saying "I hold 9 buckets of water", yes but how big are those buckets?

I take your point but I think both the T430 and T460 batteries will use 18650 cells which are not going to vary as much as water buckets :-)

Not really. Sony US18650VTC6 Has a nominal capacity of 3AH. Sanyo UR18650-NSX has a nominal of 2.5AH. LG LGDAHB21865 has a nominal capacity of 1.5AH. LG LG18650MJ1 has 3.5AH.

There's no way anyone on this planet is going to see 17 hours from a T460.  Like the above poster says, you're looking at about 5-6 hours from anew machine.  With a used machine and used batteries you're looking at even less.  Ask the seller for the design capacity and the full charge capacity of the batteries.  You can estimate the battery life from these (if the full charge capacity is 1/2 the design spec, you get about 1/2 the 5-6 hour battery life).
