T460p Windows 10 2004, explorer startup problem-black screen on startup, need Ctrl+Alt+Del to run it

2020-07-15, 10:33 AM

Hi there community Since I upgraded from Windows 10 1909 to Windows 10 2004 - explorer.exe is not running upon startup. When I turn it on and see login screen, after I type password (or swipe my finger on fingerprint reader - doesn't matter) all I can see is black screen. I can see the mouse pointer thought. Now, to be able to operate my laptop I need to click Ctrl+Alt+Del on keyboard, the File -

->Run and type explorer or explorer.exe. After that everything work as usual.

Now, after couple of days of fiddling with above problem I did fresh installation using Windows 10 2004 image from MS. After Windows 10 2004 installation I run Lenovo System Update for Windows 10. Everything went fine. Until I switched my laptop off. When I turned it on - BAM - black screen. And very same behavior as earlier. This is on fresh install, no apps, just pure Windows 10 2004 + Lenovo System Update for Windows 10 drivers and Windows 10 2004 newest updates.

Of course, I was looking for an answer on the Internet - but all advises were not applicable here. Registry hacks, additional entries etc.

Anyone can help me with this one?

Bart

Same thing is happening with my new Lenovo Ideapad 5 15IIL05. Computer starts (Lenovo splash), use Windows Hello fingerprint to sign in, then black screen with cursor visible.  Happens intermittently whether doing a restart or cold boot; and the temporary remedy each time is the control alt delete to open up the task manager and run explorer.exe with administrative rights. BTW: I use an administrator account. Anyone know a permanent fix?
