T460p & T460s WQHD Display - 8bit or 6bit?

2016-11-29, 22:12 PM

I've been trying to find this info online but have been unsuccessful so far:

Is the WQHD panel used in the T460p (and T460s?) a 6bit or 8bit display?

Hi

WQHD (QHD) LCD panels needs 4 lanes in the eDP connector. According to the specs T460s and T460p support the displays with resolution 2560x1440, maximum. I doubt these laptops have 6 or 8 lanes in the eDP connector as even 4K UHD (3840×2160) display (P50 is an example of laptop with such display) needs 4 eDP lanes.

I'm talking about bit-depth rather than number of lanes in the eDP connection.  Most (cheaper) laptop displays are 6 bit, but a lot of the newer hi res ones are 8 bit.  6 bit screens have to use dithering to approximate the full 16.7 million colors that 8 bit can display.  The last few laptops with intel video that I've used have had static dithering on 6 bit panels, which can be pretty noticeable especially in dark grey areas.

OK, I see my fault.

I haven't found fast the manufacturer's specs for WQHD LCD panels in the T460p:
FRU 00HN877 - LGD p/n LP140QH1-SPF1
FRU 00HN878 - Panasonic p/n VVX14T058J00 (or it might be VVX14T058J02)

As an example for comparision: LP140QH1-SPA2, WQHD panel in x1c gen3 (i.e.previous generation) - 8-bit, 16.7M colors
