[T470] Blue screen (WHEA uncorrectable error)

2017-06-25, 2:15 AM

Hi,

I got a new T470 a few weeks ago and everything was working fine. It is running Windows 10 Pro.

Yesterday, the computer restarted itself and went straight to a blue screen with the "whea uncorrectable error" code.

Everytime I try to restart the computer, it is directly blue screening.

The automatic repair fails (blue screen), booting from a Windows recovery DVD fails (blue screen) and everything else fails as well.

Does anybody know how I can fix this?

Thanks.

Not good... You might try going int to the BIOS and resetting it to the setup defaults... but if you are getting a BSOD even when booting from a recovery DVD, you can rule out device drivers or a corrupted Windows OS installation as the cause, so that pretty much leaves only one other possibility, which would be bad hardware such as a bad CPU or system board etc..

Since it is under warranty, I would call support at 877-453-6686 and open a ticket.

Best of Luck,

I already tried resetting the BIOS settings to the default values and I still get the same error.

It is really frustrating. I opened a ticket and I will wait for their response.

Thank you.

Hi GoTN,

In order to assist the support to resolve your issue faster, you may perform a Lenovo Diagnostics - Full System Scan.

To access Lenovo Diagnostics, power on your PC > while Power On Self Test (POST) screen appears > press F10.

Lenovo Diagnostic Tools would scan and look for any defective hardware in your system.

Hi, Thank you for your advise. I ran the Lenovo diagnostics scan (quick and extended) and all tests passed without any warning or error. Is there anything else I could do?

  • Are you absolutely sure that you are booting off the Windows recovery DVD and not internal HDD or SSD drive, and if so, at what point in the boot to the Recover Drive process does it BSOD  (e.g do to you ever get to any option screens)?
  • In your original post, you mention that Automatic repair BSOD's too, but did it actually boot into recovery and then fail during the repair attempt, or did it BSOD before recovery loaded?
  • When you boot up, do you even  get to a login screen where you could hold down the Shift Key, select reboot from the icon on lower right, and boot into Safe Mode?

You could use another Windows  system to create  Windows 10 Installation DVD or USB Media using Microsoft's Media Creation tool and then use it to boot up and attempt repairs, if you can boot from the DVD or USB that is.

There is an updated BIOS available for your system that was released on 5/30/2017, but nothing in the readme.txt for the update mentions any updates/fixes related to BSOD's, and I would not be comfortable applying a BIOS update on a system in an unstable state, because if the BIOS update were to fail, it would truly brick your laptop.

I created a USB drive with the Media Creation Tool and used F12 during startup to select it as boot device.
It gives the same results.

I first see the logo with the spinning circle. After a few seconds the screen freezes and a moment later I get the blue screen.

The same with the "automatic repair" after a few reboots. I can read the "automatic repair mode", the circle freezes and BSOD.

I never get to the login screen or anything else. The only thing I can do is pressing Enter in the beginning to go into the BIOS, run the Lenovo diagnostic tools or select a boot device.

Then it has to be a bad CPU or some other defective hardware.

Since this system is so new, I would see if you can get them to just refund you for the defective laptop, and send you another new laptop, because sending systems off to Lenovo to be repaired is far too often a complete nightmare that can take months to resolve, with the usual excuese being that they do not have have the parts..... that is if you can even get anyone to respond to your inquiries.

Best of Luck,

"This bug check is typically related to physical hardware failures. It can be heat related, defective hardware, memory or even a processor that is beginning to fail or has failed."

Probably time to use that warranty.
