Re: T470 - Choose to drain external battery first [Feature Request]

2018-11-10, 0:38 AM

I have a new T480 with the most recent bios and it's still an issue.

My main/internal battery has a 7 cycle count and was just drained to 0%. My removable battery was a 79% and had a cycle count of.... 0. So clearly it isn't wear leveling. How is it hot swappable if it takes the internal battery to 0%?

Lenovo, please fix this!

Lenovo so here is the use case:

I use large external 9-cell battery that is 3-times the size of the internal one.

If the internal battery gets discharged first, the overall battery indicator will show 75% overall charge.

With occasional work, I continue to use the laptop perhaps for a day or two with empty battery.

Except, I now have a completely dicharged battery that should be recharged soon as having those cell discharged damages them.

Most of us are actually aiming to have the battery arounf 80% charged which in reality means that you are wearing out the internal battery like crazy!

If you would like to do wear leveling between two batteries, then allow the  controller to switch every 5% of discharge, so that they are discharged evenly.

I am baffled by this behavior. Surely it can't be very hard to add a config option int the BIOS as they did for t460? This seems like a pretty reasonable request.

I'm having that problem too. There is no point in the smaller, harder to replace battery wearing first. Actually, for the same amount of time running, it will have more cycles so it'll also wear faster than a larger battery. On top of that, replacing that battery yourself, voids your warranty.

Please, there's just no point in the laptop working like this. It's been just 4 days with my new t480 and the internal battery already has 9 cycles, while the external has only 1. Just a bit of common sense please, change it altogether or give us the option or the instructions to fix it.

I would suggest for all T480, T470, T25, etc. users to send a private message to some of the Lenovo staff/mods on these forums expressing your requests and concerns over this matter. I've done this before and the mod responded that they would at least try to forward my concern to the higher ups. If we get enough people complaining it might create a splash and increase the chances of change actually taking place.

Same issue, same request.

Ignoring the customers is not a wise choice.

Plus ThinkPad series should be inner-reliable, which is what it's designed to be.

You always have the right answer, but you may do it wrong.

Battery 1 on my new T480 used to discharge first (over 8 cycles) and now Battery 2 discharges first. I'm wondering if Battery 2 is going to alway discharge first, which would be what most (not to say all) customers would like and what make more sense (from the consumer point of view).

Honestly, the Sales customer service are so useless. Sometimes they just give wrong information or they are don't know.

I expect this feature for the A485 (sibling to the T480; i.e. same design).

So far it seems to be discharging the external first but I am worried that after wear, it will start to discharge the internal first.

I agree; It is very weird that it is not even mentioned in the psref specs pdf of T480/A485
