T470 Thinkpad musical tone at boot-up then black screeen

2018-07-25, 0:13 AM

T470 laptop less than 1 year old running Windows 10 Pro; never a problem. All of a sudden crahshed and now won't boot-up. Laptop makes musical tone and then freezes with a black screen. Does not get to the Lenovo icon logo. Help...

Try removing the AC Adapter and battery, and then press and hold the power button for about 15-30 seconds, re-assemble and try booting back up.

If it is giving you musical tone, you can also use the Lenovo SmartBeep App installed on a smartphone to decode the error as described on page 91 of the T470 User Guide linked below.   It will not fix the problem, but it will hopefully point you in the right direction.

Lenovo SmartBeep smartphone app.

Good Luck,

Thank you for taking the time to reply.

I saw the remove battery and power, and then hold power button down for a minute, and then restart suggestion on youtube...did not help. Then I drained the internal batttery as well, and tried again. Still no help.

You are right...it is trying to tell me what is wrong. I don't have an Android phone - and there is no Iphone ap. Will have to find a friend with an Android to download and try it.

Still curious if anyone else has encoutered this failure.

If you can record the tone on your iPhone as an mp3 etc,  and attach the file to your reply, I can look up the error when I get home  if you want.

I have the same eror, used the app to find out what it is. Mine says it's a problem with DDR4 bad module, reinsert /replace, or replace motherboard. Strange that i tryed to use DDR4 2133P working from my P50, but on T470 it doesn't work and gives that melodic tone.

Use the app from playstore, lenovo diagnostic and you will probably get the same message. Must be something wrong with the ram module/s

If you have experienced problems with your ThinkPad’s display, follow these steps, 1: Check the video connectors, to do that, you may have to remove screws, remove the keyboard and pry on the case to get the casing off then look for black strips, if they are being stretched, you may have to gently pull on the video connectors. 2: Check the video cards, so if you’ve kept the case open, don’t follow the removing parts steps at step one, so look for the video card (located on the motherboard), you may have to google it to see what it looks like and then if there is a ton of dust or debris on it, clean it, DANGER: DO NOT USE WATER AS WATER AND COMPUTER COMPONENTS DO NOT MIX! ALSO DO NOT USE A ANTIBACTERIAL WIPE!!! 3: Use a external display or monitor, if you don’t have a external monitor, go to a store that has external monitors like Officeworks, then nice you brought one, buy a VGA cable to connect, if you still don’t get a signal, follow step 4. 4: Contact Lenovo Support. Unfortunately, these steps may not help, so maybe Lenovo might be able to help.
