T470 Windows 7 to Windows 10 upgrade USB Key Creation Issue

2018-01-03, 22:12 PM

Hello. Our organization bought two new T470s for a client of ours and, much to our dismay, found that the machines came with Windows 7 Pro preinstalled instead of Windows 10. No problem, we thought, we'll just go through the steps to upgrade!

Not so easy.

I have 2 brand new 16gb flash drives. Both computers and both flash drives were giving us a Failed to format partitions error. Every time. So I do a little research and find a Lenovo forum where someone states that you have to format the USB drives as GPT instead of MBR. No problem! I convert them to GPT.

Now, instead of "Failed to format partitions", I get a "Key already in use" error instead and can't proceed. Will somebody please assist me? This is a very unfortunate and frustrating situation.

Thanks in advance!

How are you creating the flash drives, are you using Microsoft's Media Creation Tool to create your Windows 10 installation media?

FYI    The USB Flash drive that I created my Windows 10 installer using Microsolft's Media Creation Tool is formatted as FAT32 and works just fine, as do all my other Flash drives formatted FAT32.

What brand of USB Flash drives did you buy?

As JDGillis asked, are you using Microsoft's creation tool for a clean install, or using the upgrade rights to a Lenovo Win 10 image that (may have) come with you machine:

Echoing what JDG said: FAT32 is fine for the flash drive.  You may have needed to convert the drive in your laptop from MBR to GPT or v/v depending on how the 7 image was installed and what mode you were booting in.

For installing Win 10 - from either MS or Lenovo media - it makes the most sense IMHO to set the BIOS to UEFI mode, and use a UEFI-bootable flash drive (which you should get from either download).

If the installer says you can't install to the target drive, try erasing all its partitions using the advanced options in the installer, and see if that gets you going.

Z.

Another option if you still cannot create the installation media would be to use dispart to clean the drive

  • Connect the USB drive
  • Click start, and type Command Prompt
  • Right click on search results and select run as Administrator, type: diskpart and hit Enter;
  • Type: list disk and hit Enter to display all disks on your computer (locate USB drive and note its drive number)
  • Type: select disk ?   (where ? is the drive number associated with yur USB drive)
  • Type: clean and hit Enter;
  • Type: exit to close command prompt.
  • Attempt to format again as Fat32

I am using Lenovo's USB creation tool, as is mandated by their instructions.
