T470 - unable to upgrade Thunderbolt FW "sequence contains no elements"

2021-04-14, 9:08 AM

Hi all,

I just bought a T470, I wiped it, clean installed windows, entered sysprep and installed System Update. Updated all drivers, FW, BIOS etc. but I cannot update the Thunderbolt FW.

It looks like the chip is still functional, if I run the latest Thunderbolt software then go to the about screen I am on FW v4.00 which I need to upgrade urgently to prevent the chip from dying from the known bug on this FW version. When I run the FW upgrade in System update or if I download and run as admin I receive an error:

Exception has been thrown. Closing application...

Exception type: System.InvalidOperationException

Exception message: sequence contains no elements

Any ideas how to fix this and apply the update?

Thanks

Hello AK47UK1!

Welcome to community forums

Have you tried installing the driver first before installing the firmware? You can get it here: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht508988

Let us know how it goes.

Hi, yes I have already installed that and confirmed the version in Control Panel. Any other ideas?

Is there are flags seen in the device manager for the devices like yellow marks or black arrows?

You may try checking for Windows Update and apply to install. Restart as needed.

Yes all up to date, Windows too. Confusing one as I follow the exact same steps on other T470 laptops without a problem but the chip doesn't appear to be dead. Only thing I can think of is this latest FW update does not like to be ran in sysprep but the other ones work fine like this.

Do you know if v20.00 is available anywhere for download still?

Strangely enough, just set up a T470s and have exactly the same issue. Currently on v4.00, clean installed Windows 10 20H2, system update, updated everything ok except the Thunderbolt FW.

I have used the same installer image on two other T470 laptops and they upgraded fine so only thing that is different is I am in Sysprep mode. Can't see how that makes a difference but will have to try in normal mode and see if that helps.
