T470S: Web camera stops working after 2-3 seconds

2018-10-12, 9:12 AM

Hi,

Recently I did a Windows reset on my T470s using the built-in recovery procedure. I installed all the updates, drivers, etc., using the Lenovo update tool and Windows Update.

But after the reinstall, my web camera suddenly stopped working. Every time I start a desktop application or open a website that uses the camera, it works for 1-2 seconds, but after that, the image freezes, and the green light near the camera goes out.

I can see the camera in the Device Manager (Cameras / Integrated Camera). It shows me that it has the latest driver available (Realtek 10.0.16299.20023).

Camera Privacy Mode in Lenovo Vantage is turned off.

The camera worked perfectly well from the factory before the Windows reset.

Model: T470s, serial number: ********, product number: 20HF003QUS.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Moderator note: serial number removed to prevent abuse.

Hello dropsonic,

Did you find a solution? I encounter the same issue on my L470 ... As soon as I am using an app that needs my cam (Hangouts, Camera, Appear.in, etc ...) the green light appears for a very short time (it takes a snapshot) and then blackout ... Can't do anything with it. I spend the day, installing and uinstalling stuff for Windows or from Lenovo. I don't know how to make it work again?

Two weeks again, everything was fine. Very strange.

Cheers,

It works with me by 1) uninstalling the webcam driver, 2) restarting the laptop. Windows will automatically reinstall the driver, and it works just fine. Hope it would help!

Same here with my T470! I guess the new Windows update messed it up.

Have tried uninstalling drivers and driver roll back, but none of them worked.

Honest just gonna sit and wait for Lenovo or Microsoft to fix it : \

I finally found the solution.

  1. Start Regedit.exe and go to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Media Foundation\Platform
  2. Create a REG_DWORD value named EnableFrameServerMode and leave the default value (0).
  3. Do the same for the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Windows Media Foundation\Platform

Reboot is not required. My camera started working immediately after that.

The root cause is that Microsoft seems to have dropped support for MJPEG or H264 encoding standards and moved towards YUY2 for performance in one of the major Windows 10 updates.

This helped me too

Hi Dropsonic,

Thank you! Had my nephew walk me through the registry edit process (I was not qualified) and now the camera is back in business. No longer isolated from the rest of the Zoom-ers! Kudos for cracking the code!
