T480: BIOS in read only mode

2020-09-11, 6:01 AM

I have not been dealing with the BIOS of my T480 for longer time (2 years).

Upgrade of my Linux OS now requires UEFI to be set mandatory.

When trying to change I was asked  for a password prior to entering the BIOS. I had no password set, so just pressing "return" gives an "OK", and the BIOS opens. But the BIOS is in read only mode and I'm not able to change any parameters.

How can I get the BIOS switching to edit mode again?

Thanks for your support.

Joerg

The behavior you described means that someone set a BIOS supervisor password.  You have to enter the correct BIOS supervisor password at that prompt.  If you don't know the password, and just press enter instead, then you won't be able to change any settings.

Hello,

If your laptop were provided by your company, it should be the IT manager who set a password on the BIOS.

There is no solution for switch to an unprotected Bios without the password. So You should ask to your company or to the old owner of the laptop.

Good luck
