T480: Cracking disturbing noise when playing sound

2018-04-24, 11:35 AM

When playing musinc or speech over the loudspeakers on my T480 the sound is disturbed with a low-volume, cracking, very random noise. The cracking is not in the music or speech, because on other devices the same music or speech it's perfectly okay. Also the cracking is not the same when repeating the same part of music or so, but very random. And I checked my speakers of course: With another device they are perfectly okay (with the same music).

I have updated drivers via Lenovo System Update.

What could be wrong?

Hi Jb,

Greetings from Lenovo.

As for the mentioned issue, what happens when you connect an external speaker does it play normally?

Hi Ashwin

Thanks for replying.

I have external speakers connected. The cracking noise is with the external speakers as well as with the internal speakers, but with the internal speakers it is even louder. The external speakers are high quality (Edifier R1280T) and work perfectly when I connect another device like my phone.

Update on the problem: I tried all drivers available, even the drivers from the Realtek website (that they don't recommend), with no luck.

I also tried Ubuntu (from an USB stick). There I could not detect any cracking with the same music, sounds and webcasts (with speech) that produced the cracking noise on Windows. This kind of proofs that the issue is not a hardware issue, but a problem with the driver or some software interference issue.

Update: The crackling sound problem is obviously somehow (indirectly) caused by the Intel Speedstep technology. Using Latency Mon I found out that some drivers caused long latencies when Speedstep was enabled. Since I disabled Speedstep, the sound is fine. Still, I am not happy with the fact that I cannot use the full power of the CPU, and have to run it constantly on 1.9 GHz, even if idle (draining the batttery).

Last update: To avoid the crackling sound instead of disabling Intel Speedstep in the BIOS I just created a new power scheme with CPU min and max set to 99%. This essentially also disables Intel Speedstep, but I can switch the power scheme within Windows without having to reboot. Another solution does not seem to be available. Intel Speedstep results in high latencies for some drivers, causing lags for audio, that results in cracks and other issues.

Re: T480: Cracking disturbing noise when playing sound

Hi there.

I wanted to inquite about this as well. I recently started a new job where I was given a brand new T480 laptop and it also has this crackling sound issue, both with the internal speakers and with a headset connected via the 3.5mm audio jack. I've updated every driver, BIOS and firmware with System Update and the issue persists. Disabling SpeedStep isn't an acceptable solution as this unit has a loud fan and having it run at near full blast all the time isn't good enough to fix an issue that shouldn't be there.

Is there any proper solution to this on the horizon? Is it something that could be rectified with a driver/BIOS update or would it require an actual hardware repair?

Thanks.

I have the same issues too, I also update all the drivers, but the problem still remain.

It works, thank you. Created 99% CPU min and max power scheme and cracks are gone. Even latency monitor shows green message that my system appears to be suitable for handling real-time audio without dropouts :-)

I can confirm that works as well but it's a hack workaround at best and not a proper solution. Having to have my laptop run at near 100%, running the fun hard all the time to fix this issue isn't acceptable, especially when the problem is unique to this model. Would be nice for Lenovo to issue a proper fix.
