Re: T480: Cracking disturbing noise when playing sound

Other than disabling SpeedStep (using the trick to create a power scheme with 99% CPU that can be switched to without having to reboot Windows) I am afraid there is no solution yet.

Re: T480: Cracking disturbing noise when playing sound

So, this is truly baffling and I don't know why it worked but I do have some insights for people here. Like many, I'd been having this audio crackle problem on a brand new T480, which is actually my work laptop. This system came with 8GB RAM in a single stick. Due to what I do for work, I needed an upgrade so my boss procured me another Crucial 8GB stick and I'm now at 16GB. I kid you not, as soon as I installed that RAM, the problem went away and hasn't returned.

Now, since installing that RAM, yet another issue has arisen, which is the battery drains incredibly quickly while in sleep mode (apparently another known issue with this "corporate grade" laptop that's apparently had no QA done on it) but yeah, the sound issue is gone.

I work in IT and I've never seen this before. The only thing I can think of that ties these two otherwise disparate problems together is something involving voltage that having the second stick of RAM installed alters but that's all I got.

Frankly extremely disappointed at how much Lenovo's build quality has tanked.

The speakers on this machine are truly terrible. Such a letdown for sound moving to this from a W530 media machine and x230 work machine. How can the speakers on my $1,300 laptop be worse than the speakers on the five year old phone I bought used on Craigslist. Please fix this next generation. Shameful.

I have a T480 running the factory load Windows 10 and while I do not use my speakers that much,

I don't have any cracking/popping issues.

I don't know if that points to a hardware/assembly problem on a limited number of machines,

or if it might possibly be a driver issue, but just thought I'd mention that mine seems to be fine in that regard.

Now... the battery bridge circuit is a whole other issue  :-(

If my post helps a Kudo is appreciated, if I answer your question, please mark it ”Accepted Solution“ and give it a Kudo! ... Some years ago I worked for IBM. Currently I do not work for, nor do I speak for Lenovo or IBM.

Sorry if someone feels this is unrelated... But this frustrating problem also existed on the Thinkpad X220. On this laptop however it turned out to be the Intel Gigabit Ethernet networking driver that was to blame. After installing an older version (2011-02-08) the crackling was gone. Now I was actually thinking to upgrade to the T480 from my X220 but reading about another sound crackling problem... indeed very surprising that problems with such basic functionality as the sound does not really get fixed for many years.

Any news about this issue? I bought a new t480s and sound is very bad. Only solution is to mute the sound, it is terrible!

It seems like not everyone is having this problem because the manufacturer doesn't care?!

I made a video to demonstrate my issues. Do oyu guys have the same sound issue or does your problem sound different?

https://drive.google.com/open?id=104DgLitzDnoMdYAxAmhCKCamZi_c2pVC

I bought a brand new t480s with windows 10. I unboxed it and when I booted it for the first time, windows 10 came up and cortana welcomed me with that kind of noise. sometimes noise begins already in bios.

in the meantime i reinstalled windows 10, installed windows 7, updated drivers, bios and firmware, did some changes to the bios settings etc. no success yet. frustrating.

some people "fixed" their problem by changing energy saving plan / intel speedstep. did your problem sound the same way?

thank you in advance!
