I don't have another idea, but let me reach out to another guy in Lenovo and see if he has any suggestion other than "replace motherboard".

I think it means Thunderbolt is not functioning normally.  Have you noticed any problem besides not being able to update thunderbolt firmware?  See here for a list of possible problems you might be having:  https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/sk/en/solutions/ht508988

 

As for your issue with the SafeMode error, if you are using latest driver (which you are), then we don't know how to fix that.  We are asking Intel, but I'm afraid it means the thunderbolt part on your motherboard is broken and there is no way to fix it.

My company has ~1600 T480 models deployed with both Win10 v1709 and v1809. Currently, we are only installing v1809 for any new installs. We used the SCCM v1809 package which included the Thunderbolt driver v1.41.645.0. The SCCM package on the web site still has this same version - verified today 1/3/2020. Trying to follow your recent support article https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/HT508988 to deploy the drivers and firmware, I'm not sure what to do as the solution posted is over 10 months old. Which is the correct driver for v1809 and later, and what steps should we take to deploy drivers/firmware for these?

The current T480 thunderbolt firmware update tool does not work with the DCH driver (such as 1.41.645.0).  I know that an new firmware update tool is in the works but I don't know the release schedule yet.  I am trying to find out and will post another update when I know.  I think there is nothing you can do update the firmware on these T480 machines today, running the thunderbolt driver v1.41.645.0.

 

If you have T480 machines running thunderbolt driver 17.x (such as 17.4.78.500) you can use this tool to update the thunderbolt firmware:

Due to architecture differences, the thunderbolt driver cannot be updated from 1.x to 17.x (and actually, 1.x is newer than 17.x).  I understand how painful this is but please hold tight while we work on the tool you need to get the systems updated.  Sorry for this trouble.

Another question: What is the impact of using the 1.41.x.x driver on a T480 if it is supposed to use the 17.x version?

It's just a different driver architecture.  1.x is the newer-style DCH driver that Microsoft is pushing everyone to.  17.x is the legacy driver.  T480 can use either driver but due to quirks you can't downgrade from the newer DCH driver to the older legacy driver without causing side-effects.  And due to an oversight within Lenovo, the firmware flash tool is not yet compatible with the DCH driver even though this driver was released many months ago.

Is there any update to this? I think my thunderbolt firmware/software is causing me problems.

I have a T480, and cannot update the thunderbolt firmware as the software says there is no thunderbolt controller.

I cannot find any thunderbolt devices in the device manager, and the control software shows no device version.

This on itself is no big problem, but I haven't been able to charge my laptop at more than 15 watts for a week now, and replacing the AC adapter has no effect.
