Re: T480: Does not switch to secondary battery, turns off unexpectedly (Win10)

2021-01-09, 16:13 PM
I was having the problem where the laptop just shuts down once Battery 2 is empty instead of smoothly transitioning into Battery 1. These steps seem to have fixed it for now and now it transitions smoothly to Battery 1. One thing I noted was that previously, the Battery 2 would go down to 0% while the other stayed at 100% but now it seems like it stops at 5% and the other one takes over. Not sure whether the driver reinstallation or battery reset in BIOS got it working but I'm gonna pin it on faulty Microsoft drivers for now, that's how it looks like at least. Many thanks for sharing this Jim!

This is an update on my previous reply on T460s. I did this in phases and noticed that it is actually the step that disables the battery in BIOS that does the trick and fixes this issue. However, the fix is temporary and works only during the first battery-drain cycle. It does not even last a single boot cycle. :-(

Re:T480: Does not switch to secondary battery, turns off unexpectedly (Win10)

I'm very frustrated.

My T480 is now shutting down w/ 0% charge on battery #2 (removable)  With battery #1 (internal) still at full charge,

and then won't turn back on unless plugged in....

My machine WAS discharging battery #1 first (another think I don't like)

BUT was switching from switching to #2 at 5% remaining charge to use Batt. #1

and continuing on ...

I wonder if these two stupid things are somehow related?

i.e. the order of discharge and transitioning smoothly (or not) to the other battery.

I'm in the middle of a big project and unfortunately can not devote much time to experimenting,

and obviously I don't think us owners should be put in the position of having to do soo.......................

Lenovo:

Can you please give us a hand??  I think we'd all like to have the following features:

1) most obviously:  execute the transition from one battery to the other seamlessly
2) Allow us to set order of discharge  1->2  or 2->1

3) Set transition threshold  to something higher than 5% ... say 20%

Can anyone help me with some more data points please?

Could you please use Lenovo Vantage --> Device --> Power

then RESET both batteries and see if your machine acts differently afterwards?

Thanks, it clearly NOT something owners should be expected to do, but I did it to my batteries last week and now it is working ok...

I don't KNOW that it was resetting the batteries as ... among other things the January patch set was pushed to my machine in that same timeframe....

Just curious   ;-)

My machine has not successfully transitioned four times from Battery #2 -->  Battery #1 at the 5% power remaining mark on Bat. #1

I really don't know why.................

Well... dang...............

I'm really not sure what fixed mine then........

I'm cycled into the 2nd battery several more times and had smooth transitions.

There have been no Lenovo updates for my machine (T480) recently.

I did install the January patches from Microsoft ...

I did have battery charge threshold disabled as it seemed to be interferring with wake-from-suspend,

but I've turned that back on and it still wakes....

I have no clue  :-/
