T480 Windows 10 slow 30min blank screen

2018-06-18, 11:46 AM

I have a windows 10 pro installed on thinkpad t480, i7-8(something) processor, 1x 16-gb memory and mx150 graphics.

I changed internal disk from seagate thin 500gb to Samsung 860 evo 500gb after using Samsung clone.

System was unable to boot after I did the clone, I did some reset on secure boot settings in bios and played around with boot procedure and it manage to boot.

Then the horror started. Boot up process takes 30min to 1hr20min intermittently. Hibernate and wakes up also take that long.

Once it boots up, I don’t see any issues or errors. The problem seems to occur only during the boot process. It’s as though chkdsk has to run all the time in the background of a black screen.

I have reset all security and customized bios settings and reformatted my ssd disk. Problem persists.

I suspect problem is related to bios or config but I can’t figure out which part.

My system is fast, and really usable with no issues when it’s boot into windows 10 - 1803.

I did hardware check using built in diagnostic tools and found no error in all components. Mainboard, Ram, hdd, io devices.

I tried putting back the original 500gb seagate disk and problem with black screen and really slow start up occurred too!

This is what I would do:

1.  from BIOS setup, go to "restart" page, make sure OS Optimized Defaults is set as Enabled.  Then press F9 to load setup defaults, and F10 to save & exit.

2.  clean-install Win10 1803 on the SSD (NOT clone from HDD).

I did the re-installation of Windows 10.

I did a total of 3x rounds of install because I thought my installation had issues.

Round 1, delete the C drive and create new partition, format it and install on the same partition.

Round 2, delete all recovery and system partition, format and let windows construct the necessary partitions.

Round 3, delete the entire disk, re-do everything from scratch...

In all 3x cases, I thought there was a problem after the install... I realized that all it required was wait long enough for windows to load up and the loading was so-so-so long....
