Re: T480 battery discharge problem: internal battery goes first at all times!

Or even better, let us choose the behavior, and change the warranty policy accordingly for the batteries.

I have a 48KW external Battery and the 24KW internal Battery and the internal is being used up first - so, no, this is a design feature as stated. It arrived just a few days ago so we're just seeing if the internal battery will hand over to the external one when it is used up and, if it doesn't, off the laptop will pop back to Lenovo for a refund,

Let us know what happens. What happened to me was the percent of the internal battery got stuck right around 7% when in reality it was still draining and then went all the way to 0% rather than switching to the external.

My internal battery is favored, and it stops at 5% before switching to the removable  I've had my device for a week. How long have you had yours??

Had it since Tuesday (4th) - this is the first time of using the batteries up and then recharging (as we don't use the battery much, we have always used our laptop battery once a week to 20% if we don't use it for 7 days normally). I'll let you know what happens.

Re: T480 battery discharge problem: internal battery goes first at all times!

I've had my T480 for a month now and have used it on several occasions without the power-cord. The internal battery always depleted first down to 5% of the initial charge, and then the external one started discharging. The internal has gone over 8 discharging/charging cycles, while the external one has gone over 3 cycles. Lets see if the discharging priority will switch after some time when the internal will have reached a bit larger number of cycles vs. the external. If this does not happen, then the only explanation is that Lenovo wants us to eventually pay for the internal battery replacement, which wiould be a very dishonest business practice.

In answer to souldier, it seemed to stick at 7% but then went to 5% when the external battery kicked in. Just running that one down now. The transition was seamless. But Lenovo need to get this resolved. If they would justify why the batteries are used in this order, perhaps we could understand the logic. But, atm, it baffles me.

I have this same problem, and the technical service offered me to swap the laptop, as it is in it's first 15 days. But reading this kind of posts has shown me that it may not be a solution. I don't know if the order is controlled by the bios or what, but I've seen there's a registry directory (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > WOW6432Node > Lenovo > PWRMGRV > Data > DualModeBattery) which has a few things related to this dual mode.

I really don't know, but maybe someone could figure how this works? Or perhaps a lucky user with the external battery draining first could show us how it's instance of the registry entries to try and fool around a bit.

I've also published the issue in the thinkpad reddit, but no responses so far. https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/a5xht3/battery_drain_order_t480_is_there_a_registry/

Macute,

This is a good find. I'm sure sooner than later someone here will be able to find a way to use this information to our benefit. I took a quick look at my registry and found nothing useful that leads to the order of the batteries. It may be bios level.

Yeah, it might very well be BIOS controlled. I found it while trying to fix Lenovo Vantage deactivating battery treshold as soon as I activated it. There are a few entries in "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > WOW6432Node > Lenovo > PWRMGRV > Data" which, after editing them, made the battery treshold work, so I thought it could be worth giving it a shot.
