Re: T480 battery discharge problem: internal battery goes first at all times!

2019-02-11, 13:39 PM

It's quite astonishing to me how loyal ThinkPad users have been expressing their disatisfaction with this design change decision for a good while now, and yet Lenovo remains completely silent and indifferent. All they need to do is release a simple update that gives the user the option to choose discharging behavior or at the very least respond to us. Thus far - no replies, no updates.. just blatant ignoring. I fear that Lenovo has grown to such an enormous size that they've long lost their ability to provide quality, non-automated support that considers the requests and needs of the everyday user.

Re: T480 battery discharge problem: internal battery goes first at all times!

I use my T480 plugged in, most of the time. I keep my battery charged at 60% (both) in order to decrease the wear. When I unplug the laptop, Battery 2 (external) starts discharging first. Initially, it was Battery 1 (internal) that discharged first, but I had the batteries charged to 100% at that time.

I've played around with the battery charging threshold settings myself to see if it would change discharging behavior and discovered it doesn't make any difference. The system will decide which battery to discharge based on which battery has the least wear level. The only reason your external battery is discharging first is because it still holds a higher percent of its designed capacity. After a few discharges, it will switch back to the internal one. You might not notice it if you are usually plugged in.

You might be right. My internal battery is at 24.37 Wh (10 cycles) and the external one is at 24.83 Wh (7 cycles) - negligible diference. I'll see what happens in the future.

Re: T480 battery discharge problem: internal battery goes first at all times!

So my T480 is now almost one year old...........

The internal battery ... having more wear .... :smileysad: reports an actual capacity of 18Wh vs. design capacity of 24Wh.

So it's lost almost 25% of it's capacity in one year of fairly light use.  The Vantage tool still reports the status as "Good".

Does anyone know what thresholds are set for   GOOD  vs.  FAIR  vs.  POOR  ?

Insanity that I can't tell the machine to use the external battery first ... always (at least in my machine...

I guess I may need to buy a second external battery so that the current algorythm will favor discharging it first....

Does anyone know of third-party batteries that are permitted in the T480?

I don't know why I made this append ... it's 4AM I'm stuck working a support call....   :-(

That's a bummer. I have 3 spare external batteries (two 72wh and one 24wh) so it makes it easier to work the system. I got my batteries from lenovo however. If I am not mistaken, the batteries compatible with the T470 should work with the T480, and there are plenty of those all over the place.

If you are still within warranty and your machine has not been behaving as it should, I would definitely claim warranty and fight to replace the entire thing. If your internal battery has that much wear and still doesn't discharge the external battery first, then buying a spare probably won't remedy the issue.

Thanks souldier!

I'm almost out of warranty ... I'll have to figure out what to do this wkend....

but I expect that since the Vantage "tester" says the batteries are   "GOOD" ...

Lenovo will wave me off...................

I have heard that the 'wear leveling' software in the T480 will lean towards charging/discharging the battery that has less cycles on it ... but I'm not sure of that.........

Thanks also for the tip on the T470 batteries ... I'll check compatibility.

I'd like to purchase a 3rd-party spare to save some bucks but .... the Lenovo "fake" detector may get in my way....

Re: T480 battery discharge problem: internal battery goes first at all times!

Got my T480 as my desktop-replacement from my employer just this March and it really sucks that my Battery 1 is already at 20 cycles while Battery 2 is merely at Cycle 5. I've been looking high and low for this elusive BIOS update that's supposed to address the discharge order, and so far, I'm really disappointed with how the internal battery's wear is supposed to play catch-up with the external one. Aren't we supposed to try and prolong the internal battery's life in the first place?  >_>

Anyway. I just had to register to respond to this thread. I'm close to giving up.

Re: T480 battery discharge problem: internal battery goes first at all times!

2019-05-21, 12:06 PM

I posted the original question, and here goes how I use my T480 now:

  • To begin with, my battery seems to be fine ==> mine seems to be discharging the external battery reliably as of this typing. Yet, this is after having the entire machine replaced through the fights over the other troubles over an extended period of time.
  • Secondly, I do not use the laptop on batteries primarily anymore: I noticed that the machine is more stable the longer it stays on a "headless dock", and I perform laptop-hygiene (lol) strictly ==> not to push the machine to the limits too much :)
  • More on this "headless dock" thing ==> I think the Intel UHD 620 is not a strong enough graphic adaptor, and abusing it with multiple external moniotrs is an overkill. After months of frustration where I tried to use the T480 both as a laptop and a desktop replacement, I found it a new role ==> it works most reliably as a "server".

For now, I still believe in the build quality of T480, but I really have a hard time believing strongly in it as a 24/7 go-to machine ==> the drivers will glitch far too easily should one believe too strongly in this piece of blackbox. Yes, it can be docked and can work as a desktop machine as well, but it does not handle the convertion across its various modes (dekstop/laptop) reliably. For now, my new practice for laptop-hygiene is to restart the T480 everytime I move it to a new docking station, should I need to use external displays on that dock.

Long story short, I learned, after months of struggle, that one shall pick the right usage of the tool when one is stuck with the tool :) Along the way, I learned what the T480 is capable of, and what it is shy of. Now, I stay with it.

I wish everyone who dropped in this post best of luck, and I can provide more typing on setting up T480 for RDP (headless) connection. Let me know :)

Hello Lenovo.... anybody there to answer to us?

After two BIOS updates, the internal battery still drains first, despite it's charge capacity is lower than that one of the external battery.
