T480 connect three external WQHD monitors - which dock?

2021-03-20, 15:14 PM

Hello,

I want to connect three external monitors (and keyboard, mouse, headphones) to my Thinkpad T480 through a docking station. The internal display will be off.

The monitors resolution is 2560x1440, size is 27" and have 60-75Hz.

Am I right that it is only possible with the Ultra docking station (40AJ)?

And one monitors needs to be connected via VGA?

Is it compatible with Linux?

Thank you!

exactly, the dock is "just a pass-through" for DP. It does not have any built-in GFX adapters

.

Would it work if I connect the two QHD displays with a docking station to the USB-C port and connect the third QHD monitor to HDMI?

theoretically yes, but the HDMI port on the T480  is shared with the first USB-C port.  If you connect any display to the HDMI port,   the displays connected to the docking station  are  disabled.  Without the dock, you  could daisy-chain  two displays to the thunderbolt 3 compatible USB-C port and connect the third monitor to the HDMI port.

Three  QHD displays (60Hz) exceed the available data rate of DP1.2. You will need to configure one display to 30Hz  or use a FHD  resolution @60Hz.

Connectivity:  you can daisy-chain the displays to DP port.  No need to use VGA. This should also work with the Pro docking station. But of course you'll need monitors that support this feature. With two DP ports available at least one of the three monitors need to support DP daisy-chain.

Thank you.

So a docking station is using only the bandwith of that USB-C/DP1.2 bandwith.
