Re: T480 throttling and high CPU temps

2018-05-11, 5:25 AM
I guess that Lenovo is not interested in fixing the issue at all. The T480 is selling anyway. I had a similar problem with my P51 (that I returned because of this), and nothing got Lenovo's attention, not even 3 unsuccessful warranty repairs with a lot of information from my side and a very long thread. Even after months they did nothing to fix the issue. And obviously learned nothing from it. I am afraid that I am done with ThinkPads because of this.

Similar problem with T580 (i8550U and MX150) here. CPU seems to be OK, but GPU throttles down heavily after 20-30 minutes of gaming. I was thinking of switching to P52 once it's available, but reading your commend I wonder if it makes sense.

Two simple questions: Does this affect all 480s?  How do I know if mine is?

I don't understand any of the technical info in this discussion ...

@Nardar: I don't know if it affects all T480 or T480S models. I guess it's heavily related to which CPU and GPU the T480 has (mine is top-end). The problem is that the CPU, and obviously also the GPU, gets way too hot when it's used in a normal way, like when developing software or gaming. You can measure the temps with HwInfo. In my case the CPU gets up to 98°C, which is very hot. Run HwInfo with sensors only (you get a dialog when starting) and check the "CPU Package" values in the "CPU [#0]: Intel <Your CPU model>: DTS" section. I am no expert, but I would be happy if the max temp would not reach 90°C. From 90°C on the CPU is throttled down, essentially reducing the performance of your laptop, like stepping on the brake.

What are considered to be the the maximum safe temperatures for the CPU and SSD?

I'm having to do a lot of data migration between some T480 units and the SSD drives are running up to about 63C unless I change the power mode to "best battery life".
Even though the machines are plugged in, this drops the temps from ~63 to ~57....
If my post helps a Kudo is appreciated, if I answer your question, please mark it ”Accepted Solution“ and give it a Kudo! ... Some years ago I worked for IBM. Currently I do not work for, nor do I speak for Lenovo or IBM.

8/30/18 I can also confirm that this has been a large issue for me, even after the new driver update. I have owned many T series and the new X1 Carbon with the same new intel architecture and this is a Fail on Lenovo's part. Hearing loss due to this fan should not be a side effect of any of your products, please listen to your customers and create a working patch!  If all the other vendors can make this work Lenovo should be able to as well.

Lenovo, you got to increase the maximum fan speed on my T480s otherwise I would be very sad

I love my T480s, it has Intel 8550u CPU and I already undervolted it to -0.140V which is great

But still it's not enough, the CPU throttles after 2 min of heavy usage

You must apply the patch to increase the fan speed, the noise level is still low

I know you can do it guys

I need the maximum 3.7Ghz from my CPU

Re: T480 throttling and high CPU temps

I think this is just an ongoing issue that Lenovo doesn't really intend to fix. Other product of this is CPU frequency taking a dive to around .2-.4 GHz and staying there until you reboot. I've experienced the high temperatures as well, but after a repaste using liquid metal my thermals are considerably better.

Still, even though the CPU and GPU don't see past 75c on heavy loads, I myself, encounter the throttling. I mostly do 3D modeling in Maya, which doesn't become graphically or computationally intensive until I start building textures and rendering them out. . .Which I've yet to do.

So I've been using my trusty T430S...which does all of the above just fine.

I think the T480 is crippled until Lenovo releases some sort of BIOS or firmware update. Not holding my breath though.

Re: T480 throttling and high CPU temps

Hello

I am considering buying this laptop and I have read that the mx150 throttles at around 70c. I was wondering if Lenovo had fixed this issue or perhaps has increased the maximum temp?

I know that it's not a gaming laptop but how does it do on light gaming?

Thanks

The same here. The problem was not fixed by Lenovo, but it can be solved manually by undervolting CPU and using TPFC to make fan run faster. Since that I have never had problems during gaming.

By the way it's CPU (not MX150 itself) that throttles when mx150 reaches 70c.
