T490 MX250 performance problem

2019-08-02, 9:40 AM

Hi! I just received T490 with MX250 model few days ago. I tried to play some games and the performance was super bad with MX250. I disabled MX250 in Device Manager and I tried UHD620 only then actually UHD620 is better performance than MX250. I don't know what's happened with my T490. If someone had same issue and solved this issue, please advice me.

I tried these actions but not solved yet.

1. Configure NVIDIA Control Panel to choose MX250 intensively

2. Power management setting to "Performance"

-> Not solved

3. Recovery -> Reset the PC for clean install

-> After recovery I did No1 and No2 but Not solved

4. Install latest driver from NVIDIA

-> After 3, I tried new driver from NVIDIA but Not solved

Also I did hardware scan but no error at all with my T490.

These are the benchmark score with UHD 620 and MX250

3D MARK Firestrike

- UHD620 970

- MX250 516

Cinebench R15 OpenCL

- UHD 620 45.72fps

- MX250 43.52fps

Hi Rob_MT,

Have you tried to update everything including BIOS with Lenovo System Update app?

Warmest Regards,

Peter

Hi Peter,

Thank you for your reply.

Yes, I updated everything with Lenovo Vantage.

I updated OS to Windows 10 1903 but still same situation.

If I found some error I can escalate to Lenovo support but my T490 seems very normal.

Attached my test result AIDA64 with UHD620 and MX250.

It seems MX250 is very slow.

Best regards,

Miki

Re: T490 MX250 performance problem

I tested and I found why performance is low. It's because GPU Clock is not increased when MX250 is used.

I use NVIDIA Inspector and check Current Clock. It's always 139MHz even though GPU load 100%. I believe it must be at least Default Clock 1518MHz.

I changed my configuration like below

- Priority GPU is NVIDIA in Global Setting in NVIDIA Control Panel

- Power Management to Maximum Performance in NVIDIA Control Panel

- Performance in Battery setting in Windows 10

But it didn't work. Nothing changed.

Can anyone help how to make my MX250 work?

Best regards,

Rob

Re: T490 MX250 performance problem

so after i tried several solutions, i solved it,

the root of the problem is the power, at first I had my thinkpad charging, when I unplugged my frame rate immediately returned to normal.
so i tinkered around with the power management and i found the easiest solution is to move the power slider (appear only when the Balanced power plan is applied) to high perormances.

thats it, no driver update, no bios modification

I am just going to leave this here in case someone suffers from a similar problem in the future.

I checked my T490 with FurMark and it does seem that GPU hits some thermal limit for Balanced power plan set at "Better Performance".  This limit is increased for "Best Performance".  I will ask thermal engineer for a comment, but I am thinking it might be normal behavior.  "Best Performance" mode should be used for games.

Re: T490 MX250 performance problem

I have the same issue with my S540 Ideapad with i7/MX250 setup.

Overwatch for example running mostly at 60-70fps and then drops down to 15-25fps for some intervals. Tried so set to high performance in windows energy settings but that didn't change much.

Any help on this?

I am suffering from the same graphic performance problem
Also, if you're curious about the person's opinion, has the representative's opinion arrived yet?

I'm having the same issue. The new BIOS cut the performance of my laptop by about 30%. In performance mode it can't get above 2.8Ghz now. You guys need to revert to the old power settings in the BIOS.
