T490/T590 BIOS bootable CD version ((none)-1.12) in wrong format

2020-09-16, 16:35 PM

BIOS Bootable CD "BIOS Update (Bootable CD) Version (none)-1.12" (Released Date:  21 Jul 2019) from the link is not booting when burn to CD/DVD.

https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/gb/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-t-series-laptops/thinkpad-t490-type-20n2-20n3/downloads/driver-list/component?name=BIOS%2FUEFI

When comparing the size of this ISO image with the "BIOS Update (Bootable CD)" (Released Date:  31 Aug 2020), the size almost 70MB smaller.

Can anyone confirm, if the bootable CD version ISO image is working?

I'm not able to confirm or deny, but have a look at the README file.  1.12 appears to be an EC-only update, not a full BIOS update.  Version:  "(none)-1.12" where "none" is the BIOS component.

Thanks for the quick reply Z. But even to update EC-Only update using this Bootable CD method is not working due to the wrong format of the ISO image. Can anyone from Lenovo support team can look into this ISO image?

Hmmm, I can't boot it either.  Just loops on the boot menu.  I can't tell if that is because I don't have the right target laptop or something is amiss.

Thanks Z.. I am also getting the same loops on boot menu with the Boot CD. I confirm the same is working fine for "BIOS Update (Bootable CD)" (Released Date: 31 Aug 2020). Looks like the ISO image format is not right and need Lenovo support team to get this fixed.

If you have access to a Windows machine/VM, then you can create a bootable BIOS FLASH USB drive and update the EC firmware.

Get the Windows update archive file, extract the content to a directory by starting the downloade exe file, don't forget to  uncheck 'Install EC Update utility now' at the end.

Then follow the instructions in  'Instruction US - BIOS flash USB memory key.txt'.

Good call "User..." I should have suggested that. Even wrote a KB on it a while ago.  Too focused on the ISO issue - and FWIW I have activated the "bat signal" re that.

The README file & aUserHasNoName's instructions make it pretty clear but for a bit more detail:

https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Other-Linux-Discussions-Knowledge-Base/Update-ThinkPad-BIOS-with-bootable-flash-drive/m-p/3743440

[edit to add] Ugh, the move to the new forum software has made a mess of that article.  Hopefully it's readable...
