T490 auto power off when inactive/idle problem

2020-11-18, 2:17 AM

Good Morning Guys,

Recently my T490 is having auto power off issue during inactive/idle. Can't provide the exact timing, estimate around 10-15 minutes when I was away from laptop, it will auto power off itself. I have to turn it on myself by pressing the power button.

I don't remember when was it happened, it could be caused by the driver updates recently.

I have sleep mode disabled on both battery/AC.

Battery is in good condition.

Please let me know if its driver updates are causing this.

Repair case #2000874202 has been created since 16th.  But I see no response after 2 days so that I jump to forum here to ask questions.

Thanks and Regards,

Reeyon

Hi reeyon,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Make sure that hybrid sleep is off as well and that "Hibernate After" is also disabled.

If this doesn't help solve it, check your BIOS settings for something called "Human Presence" is turned off/disabled. As this will turn off the device regardless of power settings.

Apart from that, if still unsuccessful, try making a new power plan and also update the latest MEI (Management Engine Interface) drivers from the Support Site.

Just plot in the serial number of the device and hit enter, might have to press it twice, then head to Drivers & Software, select Manual Update, then the Chipset section.

If all else fails, you can try to also reinstall the battery drivers:

Reinstall Battery drivers + Check USB Root Hubs and Generic USB hubs.

- Press Windows Key + X, select Device Manager

- Now click Batteries in the Device Manager window.

- Next, you should right-click Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery and select Uninstall from the context menu.

- Click Uninstall to confirm.

- Restart the device and have Windows install the generic driver type for the battery to be installed.

Regards

Voithos

Hi Voithos,

Thank you for the message.

Hybrid Sleep is off by default. Hibernate After is off by default too.

I tried all the steps you've mentioned, except "Human Presence" which is missing in the BIOS.

None of those are working.

The laptop will power off itself when I was away.

Regards,

Reeyon

Hi,

I'm also facing the exact issue. Thinkpad is shuts down unexpectedly when it is kept idle for sometime.

This is happening after the below updates installed from Lenovo Vantage.

  • Intel Management Engine Software Driver (Windows 10 Version 1709 or Later) - 10 [64] - 2033.15.0.1769
  • Intel Management Engine Firmware - 10 [64] - 14.0.45.1389
  • ThinkPad BIOS Update - 10 [64] - 1.14

Having Sleep After and Hibernate After to "Never. But facing the same issue.

Lenovo please look into this and push the proper updates. I guess I should never install updates from Vantage.

Hi @vinothvkr

Looks like I'm not alone 😄

yes I also suspect the recent drivers update might have causing this auto power off issue on T490 machine.

I have found the workaround solution for myself. One of the setting in BIOS called "CPU Power Management" was turned on by default.

After that setting was turned off, no more auto poweroff issue while idle/inactive/screenoff.

Please try.

@reeyon Great find.

So disabled "CPU Power Management" in BIOS. Now not noticing the unexpected shutdowns.

But just wanna know from Lenovo technician, is it okay to disable "CPU Power Management" in BIOS? Does this affect anything else.

I had the same problem and your workaround works. Thanks, mate. This issue is bugging me for months now. Another workaround which I did was to disable the screen off in the Windows power setting.

I have the same issue. I also notice that I have updated intel firmware as suggested by Lenovo Vantage. Mine is T485. This might be a common issue.

Thanks
