T490 slow boot/slow firmware

2019-10-24, 11:19 AM

I own a T490 (specifically the 20N3S19L00 model) and noticed that it boots rather slow as it is stuck for roughly 7-11s in the firmware/BIOS/UEFI stage (where the red Lenovo logo is presented _and_ before any system is booted).

I wanted to ask if this is normal and if other people owning such a machine notice the same behavior?

I tried out some BIOS options but with negligible effect. I noticed that booting with attached docking station (USB-C gen 2) lengthens the boot time by 3-4s (as probably the firmware enumerates all ports/devices, which takes quite a while). Without dock the firmware stage takes roughly 7s.

At first this did not bother me but recently I started my old T430. It boots the same linux installation in half the time (roughly 10s faster), even though its specs are much lower.

Check your bios settings, in some cases stuff like network boot can make the system wait for instructions during the startup process which it never gets.... so that can lengthen boot times.

Also, give it a try with nothing plugged in externally like USB drives or memory cards. Dunno about modern systems but one of my old thinkpads will boot a good 20 sec slower with as little as a dummy card in the sdcard slot.

Hey, thanks for the suggestions! Unfortunately, I think I tried all that already. This is why I wrote the firmware stage takes 7-11s - depending on the attached peripherials and the BIOS settings.

Deactivating the UEFI ipv4/ipv6 stack shaves off maybe 0.5s of the booting time, the other options showed no measurable impact. But it could be that I missed the one crucial option.

At the moment I am mostly interested if other owners of T490 have the same behavior with their device.

T580 owner here and yes, I am searching the same thing. My friends comparatively cheap yoga not running thinkpad flavoured fw gets to the bootloader ligtning fast while my expensive thinkpad animates the keyboard backlight and whatever else it does to slow itself down when booting to uefi

After trying out some more options in the BIOS and updating it to the latest version (1.55) I still notice the same behavior:

# systemd-analyze
Startup finished in 11.661s (firmware) + 106ms (loader) + 1.825s (kernel) + 5.511s (initrd) + 2.481s (userspace) = 21.586s

The system has a full disk encryption, i.e., the 5.5s spent in the initrd are mostly due to me typing in the password (incidentally, the encryption is the reason I usually power off the system instead of suspending it). This means that most of the booting time is consumed by the firmware.

If this is a feature and not a bug, I am disappointed. Furthermore, the model has other issues (e.g., CPU throttling), which make me regret my decision to buy it.

Well for throttling there is throttled (formerly lenovo-throttling-fix)

https://github.com/erpalma/throttled

It basically allows you to set a thermal target for your CPU making it boost properly/ier

My T580 with 8550U hits around 2.9GHz on all cores which is up from 1.7GHz without throttled.

There is also thinkfan allowing you to configure your own fan curve.

One cool thing that the bios has is the ability to set your own vendor logo.

That doesn't make it boot faster, but it feels better looking at your own image instead of the logo of a company that is destroying thinkpad reputation.

Thanks! Actually, with the newest bios (1.55) the throttling issue seems mostly fixed for my case. At least I do not notice a large difference between using throttled and not.

:smileyvery-happy: Very nice! You know what? I might actually do that :)

Hey, I'm having the exact same issue with T490 as well, did you manage to solve it?

Re:T490 slow boot/slow firmware

Hello I also experienced this one. I just had my lenovo thnkpad T490 last February 2020. I have used the fingerprint feature for my login and it was **bleep** fast! After a month, after login, I was stuck at around 20s of delay. I was looking for some kind of workaround or resolution for this one. This is quite disturbing. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Unfortunately, I still have the same behavior, the firmware consumes roughly 10s of booting time. I am pretty sure this is a "feature" of this device as my first one broke down and I got a replacement by Lenovo.

Though, I still would be interested to hear if someone worked out a reason for this.
