T500 GMA DVI Boot - Advanced Mini Dock: works with one monitor but not another

2009-03-30, 15:33 PM

Hi,

I have a T500 type 2242 with GMA X4500MHD graphics in Advanced Mini Dock. BIOS 1.20, Boot Display Device set to DVI. Single-link DVI-D cable from dock -> DVI-D input on external TFT monitor. I get different results depending on the attached monitor:

1) Planar PX191 19" 1280x1024 native: boot screen is displayed on external monitor.

2) Soyo Topaz S DYLM24D6 24" 1920x1200 native: external monitor remains off, boot screen is displayed on T500's screen.

I also have a T42 with Mini Dock DVI-D -- this one displays boot screen on the 24" monitor without trouble, using the same single-link dvi-d cable I tried with the T500.

In case it helps, here's EDID info for the 24" monitor, from xorg log file when running Linux on the T42:

Maybe there's something wrong with the Soyo's EDID? Or a bad interaction with the T500 BIOS?

I'd be grateful for any clues on how to get the boot screen to display on the 24" monitor.

Thanks,

Frank

Re: T500 GMA Won't Display Boot Screen Through Advanced Mini Dock DVI to 24" widescreen monitor

2009-08-18, 20:12 PM

Good news! I sent my T500 in for service, and Lenovo replaced the system board. Now the boot screen is properly displayed through the dock DVI port to my 24" external monitor. After which Linux  / X sees the external monitor and sets it up and displays to it properly. So: problem solved! Thanks, Lenovo :smileyhappy:

Before the system board swap, I was able to use a DisplayPort to DVI cable to talk to the 24" monitor. But that required an extra cable to plug/unplug, so it's very nice to finally have the dock DVI working.

It seems that this problem arises only with certain ThinkPad + external monitor combinations. My original system board worked fine with a 19" monitor. And another member reports that one version of a 19" Belinea monitor works fine with his T500, while an earlier version does not work. (See this thread for more details.)

Re: T500 GMA DVI Boot - Advanced Mini Dock: works with one monitor but not another

I have a practically identical setup to yours with the Soyo Topaz (except my T500 type is 2089). I'm afraid I can't offer you any help, but was curious if you can at least get the Soyo to display something after the boot screens? I can't get mine to display anything at all through DVI. VGA works fine, as did my T41.

Thanks.

Interesting that you aren't getting DVI to the Soyo from BIOS or from your OS (what are you running?) After some fiddling I got Linux (xorg intel driver 2.6.1) to talk DVI to the monitor, but it's still not right. The driver doesn't "see" the Soyo, I have to issue the following commands from a shell after X starts (putting the equivalents in xorg.conf doesn't work):

xrandr --newmode 1920x1200_soyo 154.000 1920 1968 2000 2080 1200 1203 1209 1235 +Hsync +Vsync
xrandr --addmode HDMI-2 1920x1200_soyo
xrandr --output HDMI-2 --mode 1920x1200_soyo

Even after those commands have run and the Soyo is displaying everything fine, running "xrandr" shows the Soyo status as "disconnected". I wouldn't particularly care, except that it's making it impossible to load a color calibration, as the lut loader (dispwin) doesn't see the Soyo either.

If you're running Windows and having similar trouble that's very interesting. Have you tried Fn-F7 / running Display Manager? I don't know if it would help, but you might also try PowerStrip.

If both Window and Linux drivers are having such trouble with the Soyo, that seems to point to a T500 BIOS and/or Soyo hardware problem. But like I said, my T42 (ATI graphics) can drive the Soyo no problem. So either the ATI Linux driver is doing something special or the T500 BIOS has a problem that the T42 BIOS doesn't.

Would like to get this fixed!

Re: T500 GMA DVI Boot - Advanced Mini Dock: works with one monitor but not another

2009-04-01, 3:05 AM

I'm running WinXP. Not working during boot suggests a BIOS issue to me. By the way, my T41 (which had no issues) was also running WinXP. I've tried setting up a digital scheme in the Fn-F7 manager, and when I get to the "Test" step, I receive an error saying no monitor is attached. Sounds similar to what you're seeing on Linux. I haven't seen PowerStrip before, though, so I'll try that when I get back in the office tomorrow.

It's possible that there is a bug with the Soyo that the T4x could handle, but the T500 can't. Or it might just be a bug on the T500. Either way, if it worked with the T4x, it should work with the T500.

Thanks.

Not working during boot suggests a BIOS issue to me.

You're absolutely right. I just booted my T42 attached to the Soyo and it had no trouble showing me the BIOS setup screen, boot messages, etc. The T500 cannot do this. There are no Windows or Linux OS drivers involved at this stage: it must be a bug in the T500's video BIOS.

if it worked with the T4x, it should work with the T500.

I agree 100%.

Can someone from Lenovo please look into this?

T500 GMA Won't Display Boot Screen Through Advanced Mini Dock DVI to 24" widescreen monitor

2009-04-03, 15:47 PM

I opened an "information" service request this morning. Had several telephone conversations with very nice support person Terry (in Atlanta, I think). End result of which is that he said it's not a warranty issue and thus falls outside the scope of his department. I did ask him to please pass this on to Lenovo engineering, and he said he'd ask his supervisor to do that.

Is there any other contact website, email address or phone number I could use to bring this to the attention of Lenovo engineers who could work on a fix and issue a revised BIOS?

Thanks,

Frank
