T500 Video/Video Driver Issues (2056-4SU)

2008-09-29, 14:51 PM

Machine specs are as follows:

TP T500 (2056-4SU)

switchable grapgics (Intel & ATI 3650)

2.8 Centrino 2 vPro 6MB cache

4GB RAM

Vista Business 32 OEM config

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Assuming this will stand for T400 owners as well...

The new T500 is a great machine but the current state of the video drivers, etc. leaves a lot to be desired.

Even with the OEM config, video settings do not stick (whether set through Catalyst/Windows. etc.) Sporadic Windows error telling me that the display driver malfunctioned and "repaired itself"

Event ID: 4101 "Display driver amdkmdap stopped responding and has successfully recovered."

My laptop has 1.13 BIOS revision (although 2 of the 3 T500's I ordered have the 1.12 BIOS - so that's one inconsistency. The 1.13 BIOS shows more Display options in BIOS menus. Anyone else see this???

Laptops are running with lid closed in the advanced mini-dock (part# 2504-10U) with 2 external LCD panels attached from mini dock.

Dock is also attached to a 4 port KVM switch. At times when switching the KVM to another PC, you will briefly see Vista's "hourglass" (blue circle spinning) for like one second, then you continue working on your other machine. Upon switching the KVM back to the T500, the blue circle spins again, and BOTH SCREENS go black and flash slowly 3 times. Once the system finishes wigging out, you can continue working- if your screen orientations and resolutions aren't hosed. It's not fun to keep changing your setup back and forth multiple times daily. The 3 T500's belong to IT guys and we are constantly switching to and from different pc's at our desks daily with the KVM. And the KVMs worked perfectly with our previous T61's (6460-66U) Although that NVIDIA driver had issues at times also.

Lastly, if you p*ss these things off bad enough, you get a nice black screen when you power the laptop on. The only way I could remedy that was to pull the cmos battery/jumper and cross my fingers. I still have one that's "mad" at me.

I've been messing with these things for 3 weeks already and Lenovo really needs to ramp it up on the video issues.

I cannot roll these out to customers like that - it just won't fly.

Someone/anyone, please chime in and let me know if I'm nuts or not!!

Thanks in advance,

Brian G.

I also ordered T500 in August.  When I first got it, one of the keys was hard to press.  So I sent it for repair.  I had to wait about 10 days to get the keyboard fixed as they had to get the new keyboard from China.  According to Lenovo technician, T61 keyboard does not work with T500.

Then I got the laptop back.  In the weekend that I used, the display driver was crashing.  I also used T500 with Advanced Mini dock.  The docking station was one of the reasons I bought Thinkpad.  It crashed 3 times in 3 days.  The last time was while I was browsing on facebook using Firefox.  So I returned the computer.  I cannot wait another few more months for the Lenovo (or ATI) to fix their drivers.

Hi Brian,

Indeed, also T400 users are affected. See this thread: Major troubles with DVI-port and a T400

For completeness, I referenced your thread there as well.

Is the amdkmdap-problem still present in your case?

Hello Izmi,

Yes the amdkmdap still happens. I have upgraded the BIOS to 1.15 and also tried the latest Catalyst from the ATI site. Sometimes when it's not the amdkmdap error, the system will just restart itself, although amd... happens more.

I'm considering calling IBM/Lenovo to submit a ticket. In my previous post I referenced one of the T500's with the "Black Screen of Death." I finally sent it infor repair and they put a new mobo in it. It's just rediculous.

Keep me posted in your findings.

Thanks in advance,

The system crash could also be related to the ATI driver. Sometimes, the driver crashes, is restored, crashes, is restored, ... until Windows stops the system with a BSOD. You can find about the reasons of a crash using wercon.exe on Vista. Make sure that you send the reports to Microsoft so that they can get the right people/companies work on the problem.

I would absolutely calling Lenovo support. When I called them today, they were not aware of the problem. And it seems that quite a few have the amdkmdap-problem. By calling them, you make them aware that there is an important issue which needs to be addressed asap.

Called Lenovo this afternoon. Opened a case and laid it all on the table.

The guy sent me to ibm.com to search MIGR-70417 which is an "updated" ATI driver from Lenovo. This is supposed to be from August 27th, 2008 but after I installed & rebooted Device Manager still shows 8/22/08 and the older version that I previously had installed.

It's about 138MB so it's pretty big. I DL'ed and installed but my money says that the problems don't go away. The case is going to be poen for 3 days so I'll follow up.

I can reproduce the problem quite easily:

1. Dock ThinkPad. Attach external monitor. Boot to Vista. Extend Windows desktop to external monitor.

2. Wait until Windows goes to standby.

3. Resume from standby.

=> Crash.
