T500 - Wireless connection lost - Web only, not email

2009-09-20, 16:24 PM

I've read through the long thread about dropped wireless connections, power management, 5300 drivers, and all that, and I don't think this problem is the same.  This T500 (2242-CTO) does sometimes fail to reconnect after reboot, hibernate, or sleep mode, but that is usually because the wireless radio comes up in the 'off' state.   Easy to fix.

The more frustrating problem is that, randomly while online and actively using Firefox 3.5.3, I get  the "connection was reset" message, and there is no access to any web site.

Meanwhile, I can use Thunderbird to check and receive email, and I can ping my server no problem (so it's not a power management problem).  Sometimes, if I restart Firefox, the connection resumes.  Sometimes not.   In the latter case the 'diagnose and repair' function (right-click wireless icon in tray) usually doesn't help, turning wireless on and off (with switch) usually does restore full functionality.  By the way, when Firefox is refusing to connect, IE also fails to connect, so it is evidently not a Firefox-specific problem.

Vista Home Premium, SP2 - 32 bit

The 5300 drivers (if relevant) are the following:

    Date:          2/9/2009
    Version:    12.3.2.1
    C:\windows\system32\drivers\netw5v32.sys
    C:\windows\system32\netw5c32.dll
    C:\windows\system32\netw5r32.dll

Thanks for any insights.

I've seen this happen.  12.4.0.21 driver on the web site has mostly eliminated this (only had it do it once or twice in 6+ months I've been running the driver and both of those after the system had been connected idle overnight, but of course can't reproduce the problem at all)

Driver is available here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-67283
