T500 how easy to upgrade?

2020-10-16, 10:03 AM

So after finding out the T500 I got cheap on eBay lacks dual graphics I have purchased another. However this unit has a 2.2Ghz CPU instead of 2.4Ghz and 3GB of RAM instead of 4GB.

The RAM I can easily switch over. But how easy would it be to swap the CPUs over? Is it even worth it?

T500 how easy to upgrade?

T500 should work with 2x4 GB RAM sticks either. Regarding the CPU, the replacement for P8600 doesn't worth that IMHO. Compare the CPUs, the highest T9800 the T500 supports, in particular https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/compare.html?productIds=35568,35569,37005

To add to what @x220forme said, the T500 uses DDR3 RAM. This generation of RAM can be hard to find and will likely cost more than current DDR4.

If you want to increase performance of the T500 substantially, there are two important upgrades to consider:

  1. Install the maximum 8GB (2x 4GB) RAM.
  2. Replace the HDD with an SSD. The T500 uses a standard 2.5" SATA drive. These are relatively inexpensive these days, especially in capacities of 256GB and smaller.

These upgrades are also easier to make than swapping CPUs.
