Re: T510 + i5 540M = terrible whine noise!

Hi:

I called Lenovo regarding the whine noise problem a few weeks ago and Lenovo admitted that there is no fix for this type of problem. However, if you could get in touch with Lenovo customer care ( my case was forwarded to Lenovo customer care by depot repair team ), you may exchange your whining T510 for a T520. My warranty has also been extended for another 6 months for free and I am now in the process of negotiating a deal with Lenovo regarding the exchange.

Will keep you guys posted regarding the outcome of the exchange.

Regarding the exchange of my T510 for a T520, I have received an email this morning from Lenovo customer care:

"Hi Frank,

I've just spoken to one of our sales personnel. She will arrange to call or email you on your request for the price difference for the ThinkPad T520.

Should you need any further assistance or information, please feel free to contact us.

Thank you and best regards,"

So I am currently waiting for the response from the sales personnel.

Will let you guys know the offer and full specifications of both machines once I receive the email offer.

Cheers

Good luck, hopefully Lenovo won't ask for a huge amount of money.

USB-C: Just cos it fits don't mean it works.
I don't work for Lenovo. I'm a crazy volunteer!

All,

If you are experiencing issues on the T410 / T510 models, we now have a fix available through service.  With regard to any similar sounding symptoms on T420 / T520 we will have to look into those - they are not included in this fix.

Please let me be clear that you should only contact service about this if you are actually experiencing the symptom and you can eliminate the sound by either temporarily disabling the CPU speed step function or the USB hub.  (there were two different sounds)

Refer to this KB for steps to disable CPU speed step function or USB hub.

Please also note that not all systems are affected, nor will all customers notice it.  If you do, please contact service.

I'm marking this as the official solution since this thread is huge.  I expect there will continue to be further comments posted here.

Thanks

Mark

When you say contact service you mean call tech support?  In order to get it fixed would I have to send my laptop or could i do it myself?

Thanks

There1,

Yes - thanks.  I mean call support, go through problem determination and they should find a tip that explains the issue and they should be able to set up service.  If you have depot warranty, you would send in, and unfortunately this is not something you can do yourself under warranty.   It's a bummer, I know.  Sorry. :smileysad:

Best regards,

Mark
