Re: T520 fan pulsing noise every 5 seconds

2011-08-28, 3:47 AM

Hello all,

Just purchased my t520 and upgraded to 1.28 via the lenovo us site.

I have noticed that pulsing is eliminated in all settings except when i set it to reduce noise dynamically. In this case it will still pulse around every 10-15 seconds (much longer interval than the previous 5 seconds so it is less noticable, however it is definately still there).

Is any one else experiencing this and what is the remedy? Under balanced and high performance there is no pulse, however the fan noise is quite loud. e.g. on balanced it seems that the fan is on ALL the time, which is quite annoying.

My cpu (when monitored on cpuid) goes up and down from .8ghz to 2.3 ghz so i dont think that is an issue.

Another issue I face is the boot up time, i have been advised from other owners that 38 second boot up time is normal (7200 rpm hdd, i5, 4gb) - i have wathced it boot up in that time. However I am experience times of 1 minute + sometimes up to 90 seconds. Not sure what the issue is with my machine, but the only thing i can think of is i recently upgraded ram to 8gb.

Any feedback would be appreciated!

@zxcvb,

If you can set the power manager to reduce noise that means you are still using an older version of the Power Manager, would recommend you to upgrade it to Power Manager 3.62.

You mentioned that the fan is loud, could you let me know how fast is the fan running? Also is there any load or only its on idle?

@JameZ:

What is the status of this problem?

Is T520 the only thinkpad that seems to be problem free NOW?

@ James,

What about the CPU throttling problem? Is that also completely elinminated?

The reason I am asking is I currently own a whining T510 and am thinking of upgrading to T520. After all the terrible experience with the T510, I want to make sure I don't end up buying a problematic machine AGAIN. I spent near 2000NZD for the whining T510.

I am sure you know the whining noise on T510 very well, ( it is unfortunate the motherboard replacement did not fix the problem on my T510, what a waste of time!! )

Also, I remember this forum used to list the hot topic right on top of the page inside the shaded area. That function seems to have been removed to hide the problems.........

@FrankHao,

There is no Throttling problem with the T510 after the BIOS update. If the planner changed on the T510 did not solve your issue, request them to do another one, they might have given you the older planar instead as the revised planar has a different layout.

@JameZ:

You mean there is no throttling problem for T520 after the BIOS update?

As for T510, I cannot afford to waste another week of my time sending it in for repair. Instead, I have requested for a T520 replacement to hopefully put an end to this nonsense.

I understand it was not possible for Lenovo to fix the whining T510 last year because nearly every machine more or less had the problem and there wasn't enough time for a motherboard redesign. But, I hope similar problems do not happen again the future.( luckily the pulsing fan and CPU throtling are fixed on T520 !!! )

Why can't Lenovo check their products thoroughly before release? Bad designs cause so much trouble for both the customers and the company.

         Windows 64-bit.
 - (Fix) Fixed an issue where PXE boot might fail.

Re: T520 fan plusing noise every 5 seconds

Hi,

I'm about to buy a T520 assuming this fan issue is now fixed.

Would someone be kind enough to tell me how to update the bios?

I also want to clean install windows.  Do I need to order the windows disc for that?

which one should I do it first, bios update or windows install?

Thank you very much,
