Re: T530 wifi problem / WAN Miniport (Network monitor) #2 problem

For everyone who's been stuck in yellow exclaimation mark hell, I present to you a fix:

http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Windows-8/SOLVED-WAN-Miniport-2-yellow-exclamation-mark-in-Device-Manager/td-p/1051981

No PsExec (which requires some serious hacking to make work on a default Windows 8 installation, BTW) or RegEdit. Just a few mouse clicks and a reboot.

adamsnoopy,

I'm not sure exactly what the tech said, but it seems to have created some uncertainty.

Lenovo support is provided globably through a mix of Lenovo and  partner owned support centers - in the US, IBM is providing the support for Think products - this has always been the case.   There are also numerous independent companies that have put up Lenovo, HP, Dell, etc "support" site web pages along with their own support numbers and these can be found through search (these are generally fee based).  These are in no way affiliated or doing support at our behest.   I point that out to avoid potential confusion.

The www.123rescue.com link you provided is for logmein, an industry remote access tool that our support agents do use (when appropriate)  as an option to help directly solve problems on a customer system.

Legitimate Lenovo support centers (the support numbers on our website) do have the ability to escalate cases to senior techs at their location, and on to regional Lenovo technical and engineering teams as needed.  I think that was what the agent referenced in terms of "levels above them".

I don't think this is a "universal" problem on all ThinkPads and from what I'm reading here, seems to mostly develop over time - perhaps triggered by some updates in the ecosystem, rather than being evident immediately on start up.

I would certainly like to see this issue addressed with a formal tip / solution if it is within Lenovo's control.

There seem to be a number of community provided work around solutions in the discussion - hopefully one of those can help you.  Have you tried the steps suggested by random_bit here?

Mark,

It's good to see a Lenovo representative like you stand up to respond to this thread of posts. First, I'd like to assure you that the tech I called is from Lenovo support (the number from your website). I had the misunderstanding that Lenovo support in North America was not affiliated with Lenovo because of what the tech said. After he failed to solve the WAN Miniport issue through remote access, I kindly asked him to report this notorious problem that has annoyed so many users to Lenovo engineers so as to speed up their search for solutions (I also showed him the thread of discussion here). But he refused with a flimsy excuse that they are not Lenovo. He then explained that Lenovo engineers were "four levels up" and  there is no way for him to send the message up there.

My bad experiences with Lenovo tech support and repair services gradually added up. I don’t want to reiterate these experiences again here. If interested, you may trace down to my first post on page 25 (http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/T530-wifi-problem-WAN-Miniport-Network-monitor-2-problem/td-p/934283/page/25) and see how I became more and more unhappy or even angry with your services. I can tell you that my laptop’s blue-screen issue has not been satisfactorily resolved up to today. I give up and simply keep the laptop away from my workplace to prevent the OS from crashing.

The bad experience plus what I heard from the tech made me firmly believe that Lenovo engineers and Lenovo post-purchase services were unaffiliated. At least, the communication between the two groups was poor. I still recall vividly what a tech support once told me: “I’ll put you through to an engineer, but this time don’t let them bounce you back to us”. During the repair process, I was promised twice that an engineer would call me back in two business days to explain what the problem was.  But I never received a such a call before the laptop was sent back, with a brief note saying that several parts have been replaced. Yet when I turned on the laptop, the same problem was still there.

Yes, there are many solutions provided on the Internet but none of them works for my case. As I said, I now use my Lenovo T430 laptop as a desktop at home.

There is a very simple solution.

Just go to downloadcenter.intel.com

and download the newest driver. The new version 15.8.0 works just fine on my Thinkpad T530.

Hope it helps.

JamesAtlick,

Thanks for the tip. Do you know how this intel download center differs from the software updates in the preinstalled Lenovo Solution Center on Thinkpad? The latter also seems to detect and download possible driver updates for Thinkpad.

BTW, the Intel® Driver Update Utility page is temporarily unavailable.

Re: T530 wifi problem / WAN Miniport (Network monitor) #2 problem

I am not an expert, but I think it is the same thing with every driver. Take Nvidia for example: Windows automatically installs the latest WHQL (Windows Hardware Quality Labs testing) driver. But if you go to the nvidia page and download the latest driver for your graphic card, you will notice that the WHQL Driver is two versions behind the latest driver. And I am not even talking about beta drivers (which are very stable from nvidia).

5 years ago I would have told you not to install drivers from the nvidia page, because notebook manufacturers used to have special customized drivers but nowadays there is only one driver for each series which has about 10 cards. Same goes for the Intel drivers. Go to https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=3316&DwnldID=22741&ProductFamily=Wireless+Networking&ProductLine=Intel%C2%AE+Wi-Fi+Products&ProductProduct=Intel%C2%AE+Centrino%C2%AE+Advanced-N+6205&lang=eng and scroll down to the bottom. This driver works for over 20 different wifi-cards.

So when Intel releases a new driver, it takes months to come to lenovo... on the other hand, you have no guarantee that the latest driver works with your laptop. Maybe there is some strange voodoo stuff going on and the wifi driver conflicts with your power settings driver and makes your laptop blowing up :smileyvery-happy:

On the other hand, lenovo didn't notice that this driver doesn't work. That says a lot about their "testing"

Sorry for my bad english, I am not a nativ speaker.
