Re: T540p/T440p+UltraDock+external display issues

I have T440 (20B6) and X240 (20AL) and using Pro dock + 2 monitors connected via VGA and DVI.

Have the same setup everywhere, with own Windows 7 64 bit image that we put on with MDT/WDS. No fancy stuff, a clean Windows with only Lenovo drivers.

Some setups works flawless, some don't and I have no idea of what to do. Getting very frustrated this!!!

Lenovo Support can't help, it is like talking to a wall. They doesn't seem to care at all.

My issue are the same as that usually the monitor connected to VGA becomes BLANK and the other monitor connected to the DVI flickers sometimes. All this is random.

To "solve" it I have to disconnect the VGA and then put it back in, this usually works.

I also get this balloon error message:

Display driver stopped responding and has recovered

Display driver Intel HD Graphics Drivers for Windows 8 (R) stopped responding and has successfully recovered.

Get this in the eventviewer:

Display driver igfx stopped responding and has successfully recovered.

Lenovo seem to treat this issue very lightly. I hope they can come up with solution very soon!!!

Re: T540p/T440p+UltraDock+external display issues

In short, the ONLY time when I don't have a display cutting out is when one of the 2 monitors bypassthe Ultra Dock and is connected directly to the native VGA port on the side of the laptop (even if the laptop is docked).  The monitor connected through the dock, regardless of the interface used (DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort), still cuts out.  It also happens regardless of which power supply I'm using, whether it's the 90W that came with the dock or the 135W that came with the laptop.

In addition and for what it's worth, I experience no display cutouts while using a USB 3.0 DisplayLink dock while in the client's office.

Something has to be up with the dock?

EDIT: I think someone already mentioned this or something similar earlier in the thread, but I thought I would throw it out there (again) as well.  95% of the time while I use my T440p, I'm booting/using a Windows To Go USB stick (via USB 3.0) and often get a "Keep the USB drive plugged in" message while I'm actively working on the laptop and obviously not touching the Windows To Go stick.  I'm running it on the High Performance power option plan and have disabled the USB Selective suspend setting as well but get that prompt/message several times -- already received it 2 or 3 times in the last 1.5 hours.  No loss of functionality seems to be observed when this message is generated however.

i'm having the same problem with a T440p.

I have an ultra dock 170w with dvi and vga monitors hooked up.

The vga screen goes black intermittently.  And I resolve it by unplugging the vga cord and plugging it back in.

Still waiting for a call back from Lenovo tech support.

Let's hope they resolve this quickly.

Going to try the "connect to the laptop" idea today and see what happens.

Or maybe try the USB3- docks, and those will Lenovo pay for !!!

I'm quoting my own posting from notebookreview.com here:

"I just made the following. I have two 135W adapters, one from the laptop, one form the dock. But they are acually diffent!

laptop
model number ADL135NDC3A (FRU 45N0362)

dock
ADL135NLC3A  (FRU 45N0366)

The 45N0362 seems to be ok, so I'm using that on the dock. That was also confirmed in the german thinkpad-forum".

Re: T540p/T440p+UltraDock+external display issues

What I can say is that there are 2 different problems that might seem to be just one:

1. the power supply  45N0366 makes the dock lose power for a second (or less) and causes the laptop to undock and the external screen to go black. I have to open and close the lid to make it send a signal to the monitor again.

2. after chaning the power supply by 45N0362 it still happend that the pixels on the whole screen started to flicker and then the screen turned black. I resolved that by connecting through display port instead of DVI. So I think the DVI signal is unstable or distorted. The combination 45N0366  plus display port brought back the undocking problem (1). The DVI cable is is kind of cheap, but always worked with a Dell dock and the same monitor.

So, the dock definitely has 2 problems that have to be seen and solved separately.

It would be such a nice laptop, but the whole package feels immature and badly tested. There is still the buzzing fan too.
