Betreff: T540P+UltraDock+external display issues

2013-12-29, 9:01 AM

I have Win 8.1 Enterprise, Thinkpad W540, Thinkpad Ultra Dock.

Same problems here. The graphics driver reports: "New Displayport topology detected", USB ports regularely fail after the blank screen event. This must be a problem with the Intel graphics driver

Hi,

ok so it seems, that every XY40 device is affected.

but like I just posted in the other thread this problem is certainly not a driver issue.

Just try and hook up the flickering Displays directly to the Thinkpad (on VGA and/or mDP) and see, that there will be no more flickering on them.

To "simulate" the flickering screens on the DockingStation try pulling the PowerSupply on the Dock out and put it Back in. This results in the same effect.

So the Problem must be either in the PowerSupply itself or somewhere in the Thinkpads.

I found the cause in my specific situation: the power. The docking station came with a 135W power supply, whereas the laptop comes with a 170W version. When I hooked up the 170W psu and the problem is gone.

Strange however that the 170W version of the Thinkpad Ultra Dock is almost nowhere in stock.

Strange.

My T540p and the Dock came both with a 135W power supply.

And the Problem exists, no matter if the battery is charging or fully charged.

Actually the 135W power supply should have absolutely no problem with a fully charged Quadcore Thinkpad - especially when it's in idle state (and also there the problems occour)

Odd indeed. Still, I think you're right that the problem would be power/power management/driver related. I agree that 135W should provide ample power

I removed the lenovo PM driver (it is not enough to deinstall the lenovo drivers, you need to delete the drivers in the Device Manager as well).

It is maybe too early to say, but it is the first time i had no problems in about 4 hrs running. Even plugged in some more USB Devices - no issues.

I will test this over the next days and report. Others might want to try it as well.

Hello Andre,

See this post:

http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/T540p-Intermittent-power-supply-connector/td-p/1372939

Could the problem be a faulty connector?

Regards,

Bob.

Hi,

I don't think so - I can jiggle as much as I want on the connector but the problem can't be forced like that.

Hi,

prelator found out, that the problem could be suppressed by deactivation of the "Intel SpeedStep Technology" in UEFI/BIOS. This could be no permanent solution because than the CPU will run without power management with full speed all the time what drains the battery dramaticly - but as a preliminary fix it work.

Moreover I figured out that some 90 Watts AC Adapters also supress the problem. When using one of my 90W adapters, the problem does not occour at all. Using an other 90W adapter minimizes the occurrence from every 3-15 Minutes with the 135W adapter to about one time each hour. Also the 170W adapter could be a solution as arjenjansen discovered...
