Re: T540p/T440p+UltraDock+external display issues

Good question. The windows executable doesn't work for me anyways.
I think this is a faulty device. Lenovo knows what's up with this issue. There are hundreds of thousands of users with it.

The forum here doesn't offer any file upload/download.

But you could use a free file hosting service. For example, http://www.tinyupload.com/ is one where you could freely upload a file and it will give you a link once complete and you could share the link here in the community.

I'm still struggling with this issue on my T440s. I recently PAID for a 135W power supply just to see if it would help. It didn't. I've got the docking station firmware update and newer display drivers, but it hasn't help. My two external monitors still blank out regularly.

Re: T540p/T440p+UltraDock+external display issues

2015-03-10, 22:33 PM

I have had this problem for over a year now, and I've tried a variety of things during that time without success. But surprisingly, I finally have a problem-free setup now. Here are the details.

I'm on a T440s with an external DVI monitor and also an external HDMI monitor. I've had the original poster's issue of my monitors going blank for 5 - 10 seconds, along with sometimes seeing a monitor have a fuzzy image just before it goes blank, and I've also had my Ultradock appear to lose connection such that USB devices connected to the Ultradock suddenly stop working for about 10 seconds (e.g., keyboard, printer), and then after the Microsoft Windows sounds play (which usually correspond to USB devices being connected), it's all working again.

  • I've tried the newer Ultradock firmware (fwdphb03). This changed my original problems and in some ways, things got worse.
  • I've tried two other power packs for the Ultradock.
  • I've tried updating the Intel HD graphics drivers.

What finally worked? I downgraded back to the original firmware (fwdphb01), which took a really long time to process. And I've got the stronger 135W power pack in use. I'm also running the 9/30/14 Intel HD graphics driver.  I've also got both monitors set to 60p Hz via the Intel Graphics control panel.

I don't know what was the true fix but I do know that my combination above is finally stable and working for me, and it became stable after downgrading my firmware.

This is absurd. There are 32 pages of people with this issue and no resolution?

Like others I've seen, the firmware executable doesn't do anything at all for me. It starts and immediately dies. From the sounds of it, it wouldn't fix anything anyway.

I'm also on a T440s with an external DVI monitor and also an external HDMI monitor.  The monitors I have are different manufacturers and sizes, but both set at 1920x1080 resolution.  I am experiencing only the problem where (at seemingly random intervals) one of the screens goes fuzzy, then goes black for 3-5 seconds.  It happens on both monitors, but not simultaneously.

I've tried everything mentioned in this thread relevant to my symptoms and nothing has worked.  In addition, I have replaced my original 90W powder supply that came with the dock with a 170W power supply.  No joy.  I have since opened a warranty ticket with Lenovo and they have (1) replaced my motherboard on the T440s, and (2) replaced my ultra dock.  Still no joy--the problem persists.

This problem also happens on my business partner's T440s (same hardware configuration on the laptop, same ultra dock, but he uses different monitors, and he has a dock in the office and at home--and both experience this issue.)  It seems apparent to me that this is a problem with the ultra dock.  It is ridiculous that Lenovo has not addressed this issue in a more proactive manner.

dchansen, I had a lengthy call with Lenovo support several months ago too which didn't really help. But it did at least give me the thought to try a few more things at that time.

I've been on the newer firmware (fwdphb03) for about a year and had lived with the problem. Over the last year I also continued various driver and software updates and other power supplies, to no avail. What finally worked was to DOWNGRADE the firmware for the dock back to fwdphb01 (which took a long time to run), and all is now well. My Intel HD Graphics driver has a driver date of 09/30/14 (version 10.18.10.3958).

@cgbiney...thanks for the reply.  I saw your posting in this thread and one other, and I did try downgrading to no avail.  In fact, in my case, after I downgraded to fwdphb01, when the flickering issue hit one of my monitors, it blacked out and never came back.  I had to unplug the HDMI cable from the dock and plug it back in before the image was restored.  So I put fwdphb03 back on, and that's what came preinstalled on the replacement dock.

I am running the same Intel HD Graphics driver you are.  I also tried every combination of display port/HDMI/DVI I could, all to no avail.  The issue persists no matter what cables/ adapters/ output ports I use.  (I haven't downgraded to VGA yet...not really willing to do that with the size of monitors I am using...)

I'm out of ideas, and apparently Lenovo has their head in the sand.

not to hijack the thread at all but is this issue also relavent in the t450s? I am looking to purchase a docking station but I'm pretty worried based on what I am seeing here that is still a recent and relavent issue with the external monitors flickering
