T540p hibernation vs. sleep

2013-12-30, 4:29 AM

I have a Thinkpad T540p with Windows 7 pro.  Which should I use: hibernation vs. sleep when I close the laptop lid?  I want the computer to be able to run security updates when it is either hibernating or sleeping.

Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

Refer this knowledgebase to understand the difference between sleep and hibernate.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,

Mithun.

I have a new Thinkpad T540p with windows 7.  I am a little confused about hibernation vs. sleep mode.  Which one should I choose if I want, for example, my antivirus software to run while the computer is sleeping or hibernating?  Which one should I use when I close the computer lid?

gmalakoff: I don't think it's possible to run antivirus (or any other software in way you want it) in sleep or hibernate.

When you start virus check and put your computer in sleep/hibertane mode, antivirus will stop and it will continue when you wake (turn on) your computer.

Hi Gmalakoff,

I totally agree with what Lordiik had suggested. When your computer goes to sleep/hibernate, no programs are actually able to continue 'running'. Their state is suspended and they continue to run when your computer comes out of sleep/hibernate.

A way to run a program with the screen down is to change the power settings to do nothing. So the computer will be running as it would, just not with the waste of the power going to the display.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,

Mithun.
