Re: t540p power supply problems

2014-03-04, 15:19 PM

It’s possible there may be other issues, but changing the power receptacle solved the problem for me and some others in the thread quoted below.

It seems that Lenovo have had a faulty batch of power receptacles. They are out of tolerance so the result is that some power units work ok and some don’t. The proper long-term solution is to get Lenovo to change the power receptacle on the lap-top.

 Faulty power receptacle on T540p

The receptacle is a separate unit and there’s no need to change the motherboard. The picture shows the faulty part from my T540p and the packing from the replacement part. The (faulty) cable is marked: Wistron KM1 DC Cable, 50.4LC05.001, Rev A01, HIGH-TEK(KW4), 13/10/19. The package for the (good) replacement is marked: 50.4L005.011, FRU: 04X5515.

This diagnosis was confirmed by Mark_Lenovo (Forum Admin). Here’s the reference:

"Re: T540p - Intermittent power supply connector - Solved

DAT,

Thanks - from what I understand, we have several suppliers for the internal power socket on the system.  Based on testing, we found some minor variances in tolerance with some example connectors from one of the suppliers. (Much as you suggest).

We have updated manufacturing and service parts, so if a customer has this problem, I would recommend contacting service.   We should be able to swap out the connector.  There is nothing wrong with the external power supplies (AC adapter).

I appreciate your updates on this thread.

Best regards,

Mark"

Re: t540p power supply problems

Ok, but what i want to know is that when i call local support, what should i tell them? What is the official statement? Should i tell them to change the the power receptacle (and will they also know that this is the solution to my problem)? Or do i tell them i want my adaptor changed? Of course i prefer a long term structural solution. But has this already been confirmed by Lenovo????

Thanks, Jan

Re: t540p power supply problems

It seems there  is now reasonable evidence concerning steps that lenovo could take to remedy this problem (even if not fix it completely):

1) Replace charger with FRU 45N0362.

2) If that does not work, replace the supply cable FRU 04X5515

This morning I spoke to tech support and they now want me to re-image my machine.  I have a lot of software installed, I reckon this would take a day and it is purely a fishing expedition on their part.  I have very little faith that this will fix anything.

As houtsma has asked, lenovo please can you advise us how to get technical support to take these steps?

Houtsma, pfischer,

There is an internal tip about the power connector.  Have service ensure they log into the support site with their credentials and then look under solutions by system (having selected T540p) and then look under the Battery / AC Adapter / Power Supply / Power Cables / UPS section in the list.  They should find it.

This should advise them on the DC port which is pretty much as I already said - it only affected some units built with parts from one of the suppliers.  It is a tolerance issue.

I appreciate the experiences being shared about LiteOn vs Delta 135 watt.  We'll look into this, but I don't know if that is just another aspect of the point on tolerances between the different connectors and adapter ends, or if there is truly something going on with the LiteOn adapter.

Re: t540p power supply problems

Hi Mark

Appreciate your input and advice.  I will do this.  Further information for your investigation:

When I bought the T540p, I got a spare 90W power adapter. When I first had the problem, I tried this charger, and it would not work at all... I did not pursue this problem further to begin with.

Now support have just sent me a second 90W charger:  It does not work either.

So I looked into this further:

When the 90W unit is plugged in, the power led blinks 3x indicating I think that it has detected the charger but the system refuses to charge.  I have tried disconnecting all USB devices, discharging the battery, etc. but this makes no difference.

When I look at Settings / Power it tells me something like "this charger is not suitable...".

The same happens with both the 90W units I have.

Maybe the system has decided that this charger is not powerful enough?  I have no idea of what the power logic is and cannot find any more about this.

I don't know if this problem is related but it seems like a strange coincedence...

We are ordering the LiteOn and Delta 135W adapters and will retest, but I think we are pretty convinced that the universal fix would be to change out the DC input port (for people that have this problem) as DAT notes.

Ok. i called local Lenovo support and they ordered that FRU #50.4L005.011, FRU: 04X5515 but i guess this only applies to the Lenovo t540p and NOT to the t440p!! Lenovo support was at my office today but the connectors didn´t match... See below:

wrong part.jpg

The left one is the part mentioned and had a bigger connector than the one inside my laptop at the moment. Too bad that they had to disassemble my laptop completey for nothing......

So now they are sending me the 45N0362 power brick instead.....

Hi Houtsma

If you are having these issues with a different component design then it weakens the argument that there is a tolerance issue with this component (I am not saying it is impossible, just less likely that two different components are failing in a similar way).

I have temporarily removed the Lenovo Power Management Driver (go to program features and uninstall).  I no longer get any problems.  I cannot access the battery state page in the Lenovo Settings Metro app, but apart from that everything seems to be running.

I will try re-installing it and see what happens.
