Re: T580 drives and storage

I installed the Toshiba RC 100 240GB and have been using it successfully:

But it'sout of stock for some reason;  I see it on ebay here:

Re: T580 drives and storage

I wasn't going to necro this old thread, but it seems lots of people still have interest in an NVMe M.2 2242 card for the WWAN slot

Since the RC100 never really launched and has long since been discontinued, I have been keeping an eye out for a 2242 NVMe card, sadly, they have been non existsnt!

THANKFULLY, I caught wind of the WesternDigital/SanDisk launch of the SN520 series, THEN, confirmed its use VIA reddit and these forum's in Lenovo laptops when you chose to have a 2nd SSD in your config.

So, I searched high and low, and besides people on crack on ebay who want $110+Shipping, I decided to go back to the site my company has used time and time again but has piss poor google indexing, Provantage!

https://www.provantage.com/sandisk-sdapmuw-512g-1022~7SNDK44J.htm

They also have the 256GB/128GB models, as well as the full sized 2280 and 2230:

https://www.provantage.com/service/searchsvcs?QUERY=Sandisk+SN520&SUBMIT.x=0&SUBMIT.y=0

Details here:

https://www.sandisk.com/content/dam/sandisk-main/en_us/assets/resources/data-sheets/Western-Digital-PC-SN520-Commercial-Datasheet.pdf

Keep in mind, these are x2 not x4, and in some case's that wont matter, IE in my A485 both the HDD bay NVMe Caddy/Onboard port and WWAN port are both x2 not x4 PCIe (RIP that 970 Pro I bought for it...), and it seems most units cant boot from the 2242 WWAN port SSD...

Lenovo keep kneecapping products with such potential! (seriously, a BIOS option to toggle between x4 for full sized caddy port or x2/x2 split, it can/has been done!)

Hope this helps someone!

Thanks tpennello3

"Not quite on topic, why are you putting a slow HDD as  your 2TB main drive? I'm using a 2TB Sandisk SSD instead"

In the end I bought a 2 TB SSD drive. When I have time I'll make a disk image from the factor 500 GB drive and fire up the new T580. It's here but still in the box.

I found this video from Lenovo on how to access the drives. I didn't realize I needed, in the configuration (F1), to disable the internal battery. I bought a spudger kit too.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SyGnC8jDc9U

I've looked for a nvme 2242 ssd PCIe for storing drive image backups but none to be found. I'll have to use an external drive for now but its handy if the backup image is with the laptop. I'm using Aomei Backupper, it can boot from the C: drive and doesn't need to boot from a USB or CD like Norton Ghost.

There now seems to be a 480GB 2242 nvme drive for the WWAN slot:

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA53D95R4629

It's really cheap -- almost alarmingly so.

However "thessdreview" has reviewed other mydigital products and likes them.

If I fill up my 240GB toshiba 2242 I may look to these guys for an upgrade.

(Toshiba's offering seems to have disappeared.)

Very interesting.  Thanks for the link.  We definitely need 2242 NVMe options.

I've had good luck with their SATA m.2 SSDs. Recently bought one for the T25 @ about 1/3 the cost of other options.  Also find their M2X NVMe/USB -C & 3.0 adapter very useful.  Just bought a 2nd one and put a Crucial 2-lane 1TB NVMe drive in it to use for very fast external storage.  The MyDigital devices would have been a good option there too - if I'd known about them.

Sorry if I sound like a MyDigital sales rep :) Don't know how they do it @ their prices, but so far, so good...

Z.
